Paradise Lost

The hotel property comprises a small share of the beach here - basically a couple of hundred feet of waterfront, shaped into hexagonal 'pits' filled with sand (which may not be real)and are there to prevent erosion. There is no actual beach - just a sandy ramp into the water. We found barbed wire, trash and construction debris here. The place suffered during Hurrican Wilma - no doubt about it! The owners, while friendly on a required level, didn't seem to be 'hotel service people' - more a group of family members operating a business. There was no functioning bar that we could see - and they said they could not find wine to go with the American plan evening meal. In short, the place lacked a holiday atmosphere. I would not recommend the American Plan anyway - there are restaurants close by, and the owner - I think - should make that clear when the booking is made. The town of West End is a mecca for backpackers, divers, college kids, beach bums and quite a few destitutes. People won't care that it's a ramshackle, down-at-heel, potholed dump anyway - they'll believe what they want to believe! But we didn't like four bucks a pop non-alcoholic pina coladas. By far the best place to eat is Richard's Vietnamese/Thai restaurant. Excellent atmosphere and food.
Sure it rained and howled for the six days we were there. Just our bad luck, but we have been to a lot of places in the Caribbean over the years, and this was way down the list. Sophisticated travellers beware - but if you're on a budget, and enjoy student-level accomodations and a derelict environment - be my guest!

Wonderful!
By: Gordon & Carla from Cedar Hill, TX
Date of Visit: June 2005
On our first trip to Roatan, my wife and I stayed at the West Bay area the first week and at Lost Paradise in the West End for the second week. The cabins are fantastic, lots of room, good fan, great air conditioner with a wonderful porch facing the water. The staff is extremely accomdating and helpful.
If you want to see an amazing amount of sea life, snorkel on their dock! Anemones, arrow crabs, barracuda, sea urchins, feather dusters (the largest we saw and we did 24 dives on the reef!) conch shells, cleaner shrimps, and LOTS of fish! Truly outstanding!
This is definitely a place to consider staying in the West End area. It's very quiet...but close to some great restaurants and bars (don't miss visiting the old hippies at Foster's!).

Roatan West End Lost Paradise
By: Suzanne from Florida
Date of Visit: July 2003
We arrived in Roatan at 7pm on a warm July evening. The ride was nice and Carlos the owner of Lost Paradise was at the airport to pick us up. He was a teriffic tour guide pointing out places of interest on the way to Lost Paradise. We arrived at our cabana on the beach in the West End. There was a nice porch for sitting and watching the sunset and beautiful blue waters of Roatan. The rooms were nice and clean with plenty of room for a nice vacation. There were 2 double beds in our room but they also come with a Queen sized bed. There was a small refrigerator for storing drinks and leftovers. There was a large vanity area with a seperate area for showinging and toileting. We requested an Air conditioner and it kept us very cool during our stay the maid cleaned our room daily. The owners of this resort were kind and thoughtful.
