Let's talk about the diving first since that's why most of us are in Roatan. The diving is some of the best, if not THE best I've had in the Caribbean. The Inn of Last Resort dive staff was cordial and competent, making the atmosphere very relaxed. VERY convenient to board the dive boats at the dock just a few steps from the rooms. I gave them an overall rating of 3 stars due mainly to the high quality of diving and laid back staff. If i only based my rating on diving alone, certainly 5 stars would be warranted.
OK, now the bad news. The resort is "all inclusive", meaning lodging, food and diving are wrapped up into one neat little financial package. My wife and I were shocked at how lousy the food was and soon we found out why. The "restaurant" manager was a Brit !! Nothing against that, but if you've ever been to England and experienced British cooking you know what I'm talking about. Miserable cold pancakes for breakfast, orange juice right out of the can, etc. It didn't matter if you're talking about breakfast, lunch or supper, it was all crappy. And if that's not bad enough, here's the best part - the food was tightly rationed !! Wow, it's bad enough to be served lousy food, but to not get enough food is simply ridiculous. The portions were embarassingly small and it took and act of Congress or just plain begging to get more. When you're diving two or three times a day, you're hungry as hell and need fuel. Here's an example. My wife and I went on a night dive, got up the next morning to dive, ate our rubber pancake and were starving by the time lunch was served. We were greeted by a pitiful grilled cheese sandwich (it was cold) and an Oliver Twist-sized bowl of tomato soup, Campbell's right out of the can. (More, YOU WANT MORE ??)
This really pissed us off and we actually hitched a ride into town to get something else to eat.
The rooms are spartan but comfortable enough for divers.
Bottom line: The total cost of this resort was almost 50% less than other resorts on the island so it's the place to stay if you're on a tight budget. Beware, unless things have changed, you'll also be on a tight diet. If weight loss is your goal, this is the place for you. At least the management made damn sure the bar was well stocked but didn't give a rat's ass about the food. I'm very puzzled at the other reviews indicating the food was so marvelous. I'm not picky about food but this was ridiculous.

Great Dive Vacation
By: Liz Peterson from Washington State
Date of Visit: March 2002
The Inn of Last Resort was excellent. I spent a wonderful week of diving in the beautiful tropical setting. But you can experience great diving anywhere on Roatan, the thing that makes this place unique is the excellent service and and the feeeling of family you get from the minute you walk in the door until you head back to the airport. It was the best time I've had on a dive vacation and I'll be back with friends next year!
