I won't go back

I enjoyed my stay (with some reservations), and I think the diving is fantastic, but I won't return to Fantasy island. My boat had 11 people, 8 of which I got to know pretty well. 6 out of 8 felt unsafe at some point during the dives. The guide we had didn't keep a very careful eye. We had 3 kids, brand new certs on the boat and they needed more watching than was provided. Over the course of the week among the divers at the resort, there was one broken finger, a dozen smashed shins and several pulled muscles getting in and out of the water. The dive ladders on the boat were no better than adequate, and in moderately rough water they became dangerous. The rooms were basic. Ours had holes in the walls, no locks on the patio doors, exposed wires and cheap metal frame bunks for beds. Think dorm room. The cleaning staff was great and the room was neat as a pin every day when we got back. The bar staff was alright, and the chef was friendly and helpful. The food was ok. I usually found one thing a day I thought was great and the rest was pretty bland and basic. When they pulled the trays to refill the buffet it uncovered a geletan mass of old food in hot water. They didn't clean out the steam table the whole time we were there, or probably the month preceeding. We had one incident where a staff member was serving spanish speaking guests, but ignoring english speakers and joking with her coworkers about it. Sure didn't make us feel welcome. I could list 1/2 a dozen more pros and cons, but what it comes down to is that I wouldn't chose to spend my money with Fantasy Island Resort again. If I have to I'll spend a few dollars more because I think this is an example of "you get what you pay for".

Sand Flies

over the two weeks onsite I was bit twice, all the cries of terrible swqarms of sand flies were not noticed. I had more of a problem with the constant crook in my neck from watching the monkeys in the trees.
