Anguilla is a British overseas territory, the northern most island in the Leeward chain in the Caribbean sea. Populated by about 12,000 english speaking people the majority being Anguilla Nationals.
A gentle tropical breeze blows over Anguilla most of the year and because the island is relatively flat, it stays cooler and dryer than most other islands in the area. The average temperature runs around 85 degrees most of the year with September being the hottest month and January the coolest. The island is made up of coral rock with an irregular coastline that holds a great deal of coral white sand making over 30 beautiful white sand beaches.
Most beaches are suitable for swimming and snorkeling and most are empty a great deal of the year making them excellent for private days at the beach. Many beaches now have watersports and charter boats will take you to nearby cays and secluded beaches for snorkeling and exploring. Since the island is relatively small, (17 miles long, 3 miles wide) and the population is low there is no industry with the exception of tourism.
Traffic is light and the noise level is very low all over the island. The roads are simple to navigate and the locals are friendly and helpful is you need assistance. The island has no large commercial area, rather small villages usually containing a small village shop with a limited selection of grocery items. The Valley, the island's capital has several large supermarkets with vast improvements in the quality and quantity of food items and supplies. There are also many small shops, the government offices, banks and the post office.
Dining is a pleasure in Anguilla with many world class restaurants including our Corals at Meads Bay Hideaway. There are still a number of local fishermen who supply the islands restaurants with a delightful selection of local fish and lobster. Meads Bay Hideaway has a fully stocked wine cellar with a worldwide selection of wines.
Anguilla has daily flights from Puerto Rico and Sint Maarten has direct flights from the U.S. When arriving by air at Wallblake Airport in Anguilla a taxi will be waiting to take you to your destination on island. Arriving in Sint Maarten requires a taxi ride to the Anguilla Ferry and a 20 minute ferry ride to Blowing Point with taxi drivers waiting outside.
Driving in Anguilla is simple and fun. All roads eventually lead back to the main road which runs from east to west. Remember to drive on the left and get a temporary licence when you rent your vehicle.
Anguilla is a fairly safe island with little crime but common sense is always important. Don't leave your doors open and watch out for your valuables when visiting the beach. Stopping to ask directions is not a problem as people are friendly and willing to be of assistance.
If you are looking for a quiet destination with excellent dining and white sand beaches with clear blue water...Anguilla is for you! |
