Summary:Visit the Mayan Ruins at Copan
Description: Copan Ruins is located just 12 kilometers from the Guatemalan border on the eastern corner of the country. The tiny colonial town is a charming, peaceful place to spend several days. Red tiled roofs, cobblestone streets and a lively central park are among the traditional characteristics that make the town so comfortable.
The ruins are a very special place in terms of ancient Mayan history and it was recently discovered that the ruins at Copan were in fact the center of Mayan civilization. Plan to spend at least a full day exploring the ruins and the surrounding areas, it is well worth the visit.
In addition to the Archaeological Park, there are other interesting sights nearby:
the sculpture museum at the ruins;
hot springs;
nature trails;
horseback riding;
cloud forest hiking;
rafting and tubing;
caving;
bird watching;
tobacco farming; and
Chortj Maya villages.
Besides the fascinating Copan Archaeological Park and its newly opened Rosalila tunnel, the world class Copan Sculpture Museum, the Las Sepulturas residential area and the interesting Copan Archaeological Museum right on the central plaza in town, there are dozens of activities available to travelers willing to spend a couple of days getting to know the area well.
There is plenty more to see and do even after your tour of the spectacular Copan Ruinas Archaeological Park.
This beautiful village with cobbled streets passing among white adobe buildings with red-tiled roofs is 1km from the famous Maya ruins of the same name. The village has a lovely colonial church and an aura of timeless peace. The archaeological site at the ruins is open daily and includes the Stelae of the Great Plaza, portraying the rulers of Copán, dating from 613; the ball court and hieroglyphic stairway; and the Acropolis, which has superb carved reliefs of the 16 kings of Copán. There are hot springs a one-hour drive from the village, and the nearby picturesque mountain village of Santa Rita de Copán has a beautiful plaza and a peaceful colonial church.
