Mustique - Luxurious Private Island in the Grenadines Islands
|
Mustique is a private island in the Grenadines located south of St. Vincent and North of Grenada. The entire island is owned by the Mustique Company, who rent or lease its private villas, of which 57 are available for weekly rentals. There are also 2 privately owned hotels - The Cotton House and the Firefly Guest House. Because of its luxury and isolation, Mustique has attracted a number of celebrities, including Princess Margaret, Mick Jagger, and David Bowie. Some celebrities who own the houses in Mustique do rent them out through the Mustique Villa Company. Mustique is luxurious and an expensive little island. Rental rates range between $3,000 and $30,000 per week. Mustique Beaches
The history of the island of Mustique goes back to the fifteenth century when Spanish sailors first sighted a group of islands naming them 'Los Pajoros' or 'the birds' as they resembled a flock of tiny birds in flight. In the seventeenth century the islands were renamed The Grenadines by pirates who used the sheltered bays to hide their ships and treasure. The Grenadines were later utilized by plantation owners to grow sugar until it was found the sugar beat would grow in Europe. Mustique's sugar plantations were then abandoned and swallowed up by jungle leaving only the sugar mill at 'Endeavor' and its 'Cotton House.' Mustique Food Store
Mustique was eventually purchased in 1958 by Lord Glenconner under whose guidance the island began to thrive once again. HRH The Princess Margaret accepted his generous gift of a ten-acre plot of land as a wedding present in 1960 on which she built a magnificent residence, 'Les Jolies Eaux.' In 1989 Mustique island was transformed from a family estate into a community of people dedicated to maintaining and enhancing the island for generations to come. Mustique Airport
Today Mustique retains its natural beauty and tranquility, protecting the environment and offering guests one of the most secure and pristine islands in the world. Like the airport, the island is very small. It's only 3 miles long and less than 2 miles wide. Mustique is in the Caribbean, only a 45 minute transfer from Barbados in a tiny plane. The island covers 1,400 acres (5.7 km²) and it has a coral reef. There are seven beaches on the island great for sun bathing and snorkeling. Horse riding is a favoured activity on the island. The fauna includes tortoises, herons and many other species. The population of about 500 live in the villages Lovell, Britannia Bay and Dover. Getting There: Mustique Airways, Trans Island Airways or other small airlines and charters. Most guests fly to Barbados and then take an afternoon one hour commuter airline to Mustique. Mustique Airways, Trans Island Airways (TIA) and SVG Airlines offer "shared charters" from Barbados and St. Vincent. Shared flights usually leave Barbados in early morning, noon, and late afternoon - check the airlines for current schedules. All provide private air charter service as well. Mustique Accommodations: The Cotton House The Cotton House, the only hotel on the island, was originally an 18th century cotton warehouse and sugar mill.
