Paamul - A Hidden Jem along the Riviera Maya
|
PAAMUL - Just south of Playa del Carmen is Paamul, a great place for campers with RV amenities and installations. It's not a scanky trailer park but a really nice well maintained park for RVers to land. It is very close to the reef, and an ideal spot for snorkeling or diving. It's got a nice beach front restaurant great for lunch and an afternoon cocktail. Paamul from the Air
How to get there: Paamul is one hour's drive south of Cancun, and just 10 miles south of Playa del Carmen, before Puerto Aventuras. The highway has recently been improved, so the drive is easy and quick. Buses are cheap and taxis are readily available, however, most people enjoy the independence of a rental car. Paamul from the Air
Caribbean charm awaits you at Paamul, in the primitive beauty of the Mexican Caribbean. For a day or for a life, Paamul has full hook up R.V. sites to accommodate travelers passing through as well as many full-time residents. Paamul's beach front rooms include two double beds, private bathrooms, with hot and cold water, ceiling fans, and terraces overlooking the ocean. The reefs of Paamul Restaurant & Bar feature delicious fresh seafood and regional specialties. One of the top 100 dive destinations in the world according to Scuba Diving Magazine, Paamul offers diving instruction, certification, daily dive trips and snorkeling Scuba Diving The owners of Scuba Mex Dive Shop arrived in Mexico before the latest boom of tourism in the Yucatan. They scouted up and down the coast for the best dive locations, and found them right off the coast of Paamul. All of the dive sites are close to Paamul with the reefs a short 3-15 minutes. Snorkeling Paamul has a small, rocky and quiet beach. The sheltered cove has a reef close to shore so you don't have to swim far to snorkel. If the waves are high, be careful not to crash into the coral. Bring your own snorkeling gear or the Scuba Mex dive shop rents snorkel gear. In Mayan, Paamul means "a destroyed ruin", and is also spelled alternately as Pamul. This place was supposedly a port for the Mayans for various commercial routes among the Caribbean. It was also a place for harvesting coconuts until about 30 years ago when it was converted into a sort of tourist retreat town.
Paamul is much more isolated and quiet than many of the other towns along the coast. It is peaceful and very obviously different from other towns like Playa del Carmen. When you make the turn at the Paamul sign, a dirt road with many potholes leads you to the town. Restaurant Paamul Restaurant & Bar, an open air restaurant, has a perfect view of the ocean and serves seafood and Mexican specialties. It is cheaper and better than most of the restaurants in nearby Puerto Aventuras. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner and will give you margaritas-to-go for the beach. Lodging
Visitors can enjoy beach front lodging at Paamul's Casa Willis. Casa Willis is a beautiful place to stay - right on the beach at Paamul, a short walk on the beach from the Scuba Mex dive shop, and a short drive from Cancun via beautiful Playa del Carmen. The air-conditioned, oceanfront, fully furnished casa has two levels with rental accommodations. On the 1st floor, there are two bedrooms with bath, living room with a twin-size sofa bed, satellite TV, dining area, fully equipped kitchen, and a patio. One bedroom has a queen-size bed and the other has two double beds.
Paamul Right when you enter Paamul, you see the Paamul Cabanas next to Scuba Mex, which dot the shoreline. There are also lots for RV's, and they are some nice RV's. Plenty of other places to stay dot the shoreline of the bay. Visitors are welcome to use the beach.
This is not, by any means, a highly commercialized tourist area. Paamul is quiet, rustic, and does not have the hustle and bustle that the larger touristy areas have. There was no traffic, no crowds, and was very peaceful. The Beach I would recommend wearing flip-flops or shoes along parts of the beach, because there are exposed stone areas that can be sharp. We enjoyed looking at the tide pools that had formed in the rock, many of which had some interesting marine life in them (little gobies, snails, hermit crabs, and other creatures). History of Paamul Paamul started 40 years ago as a Coconut Ranch, in this time the farm operated producing copra which was manufacturated and then sent by boat to the city of Merida. With this product the people made oil and other products. The owner of this farm Mr Francisco Martin Vazquez and Mrs Eloisa Zapata his wife and their son LAE Francisco Martin Zapata are the current owners of Paamul. Mrs Eloisa and Mr Francisco started this tourist complex. Always taking care of the environment and the typical customs of the region, they were the pioneers in the development of 10 lodges for tourists. Today they have 20 lodges and 250 trailor lots for RV's. Traveler Poll:
