Yal-Ku Lagoon - Akumal, Mexico
|
Yal-ku lagoon, known as the crown jewel of Akumal, offers visitors a chance to view a wide variety of sea life and is a good place to snorkel. Located 2 KMs (1.5 miles) north of the main entrance to Akumal, the lagoon is filled with marine life of all kinds. At times turtles can be found. Bring snorkel and fins. Plan on spending a few enjoyable hours. Yal-Ku Lagoon is a combination of saltwater from the Caribbean Sea & freshwater from the area's underground rivers, cenotes, which are a feature of the Yucatan Peninsula. At times the brackish water in the lagoon can make visibility difficult, however there are still lots of fish and underwater caverns to explore by snorkeling or diving. Cenote (pronounced say-no-tay, plural: Cenotes) is the name given in the southern part of Mexico and Central America to freshwater-filled limestone sinkholes. Cenotes are fully or partially collapsed karst caves. Mature cenotes often resemble small, circular lakes or lagoons with vertical edges. The name cenote derives from Yucatec Maya language dznot. Yal-Ku is a unique natural phenomenon and a protected habitat for regional marine life. The area recently received the protected status of an ecological zone by the authorities and as such there are certain rules that should be adhered to. Do not use sun tan lotion, oil or any type of sun block before entering the lagoon. Lotion/oil is very detrimental to the aquatic life. Instead of sun block wear a T-shirt or a wet-suit to protect your back and arms from the sun. Fishing and spear fishing as well as the use of scuba gear is prohibited here. Help keep Yal-Ku clean and beautiful by following a few simple steps. - Remove all suntan lotions, skin creams before going into the water.
- Respect the wildlife and vegetation.
- Remove nothing from the park.
- Recycle by depositing all trash in the bins provided.
