    Akumal Introduction

There are plenty of reefs, jungles & sacred Mayan sites all within easy reach of Akumal, and the natural setting almost guarantees unforgettable sunsets and moonlit nights. You'll find quiet beaches, powdery sand, scuba diving and friendly people.

Akumal, place of the turtles in the Mayan language, is where one travels to find quiet beaches, powdery sand, lush jungle, and friendly people.  Tropical life abounds in the protected bays where the most experienced snorkeler will find fulfillment, and the youngest rookie can discover the beauty of the underwater world.

Your days can be as busy and varied as you choose, or as restful and unwinding. There are plenty of reefs, jungle, sacred Mayan sites all within easy reach of Akumal, and the natural setting almost guarantees unforgettable sunsets and moonlit nights. Akumal is unspoiled in its natural beauty, providing all the comforts and services you will need on your vacation, and a true balance between tourism and the environmental conservation.

Akumal is a excellent destination for those interested in enjoying the Mexican Caribbean, located in the Yucatan Peninsula on the shores of the Caribbean Sea. Akumal is located near the Mayan ruins of Tulum, Xel-ha, Xcaret, Chichen-Itza and Coba.

There is a crescent shaped beach called Half Moon Bay that is perfect for basking the sun. Akumal Bay is where sea turtles come to lay their eggs in the summer months. The bay also offers excellent snorkeling along coral reefs in the crystal clear Caribbean waters. Biking is the prefered form of transportation and car rentals are available.

For the more adventures minded, take a trip into the jungle and explore the areas wildlife and fresh water cenote caves, which are part of the largest underground cavern systems. Fishing can be excellent, you are among Marlin, Sailfish, Dorado, King Fish, Barracuda and others just offshore.

Founded over 35 years ago, it has remained true to protecting earth's great beauties, while also providing a quality vacation in this special setting. For this reason Akumal has remained essentially the same through-out the years and remains unchanged since the development of the Cancun Tulum Corridor. It's reserved for those who truly appreciate a destination that does not need to be drastically overwhelmed.

Here you receive good tourism and welcome the traveler who is looking for an experience that will live on in the memory long after having left Akumal.

The temperature from September through April is about 80°F, and near 90°F during the remaining months. There is a continual sea breeze, and occasionally you will need a light sweater during the winter months.

    - Akumal Mexico Travel Tips -

    Car Rental:
All major rental companies are available at Cancun airport for daily or weekly rentals. If your visit falls during the high season, it is wise to reserve and confirm in advance. Car rental is usually available in Akumal with advance notice.

    Taxis:
Government regulated taxis are available at the Cancun airport or you may opt to contact a transfer service company. (We will be happy to provide you with the names and telephone numbers.) There are also taxis usually available in Akumal - our reception desk can help to arrange this for you.

    Bus:
Irregular service is available on the highway North to Cancun or South to Tulum.

    Money:
You may change US dollars into pesos at the airport, banks in Playa del Carmen (open 8AM to 5PM) but nearly every place takes dollars and gives change in pesos. Best exchange rate, like elsewhere, is from credit cards. However, not all merchants accept credit cards.

    Safety:
Food served in all Akumal restaurants is quite safe and they use purified water and ice.

    Entering Mexico:
A current passport is always the best proof of citizenship, however, U.S. citizens are not required to have a passport to travel to and from Mexico. A state issued birth certificate in conjunction with a photo I.D. or driver's license is acceptable proof of citizenship. A tourist visa will be given to you by your airlines. Upon arrival in Mexico, the Mexican Immigration Department will stamp your tourist visa. You will be given a copy. Please keep your copy, as you will be required to turn it in upon departing Mexico.

    Getting to Akumal:
The most common route to Akumal is via the Cancun airport. Your local travel agent should be able to assist you with flight and car reservations. If you prefer not to have a car, airport taxis are available at the Cancun terminal. Local taxis are available at Akumal's entrance for your return to the airport.

    Directions:
When leaving the Cancun Airport, you will turn right (south) on coastal Highway #307. At approximately 60 miles, turn left into the first Akumal entrance. Akumal can also be reached via the airport on Cozumel island. This route requires a 40 minute ferry ride to Playa Del Carmen. Local taxis and car rentals are available at Playa Del Carmen. Akumal is about 20 minutes south.

    Local Shopping and Dining:
Akumal offers six restaurants, two beach bars, a bakery, two grocery stores, three gift shops, two dive shops, a money exchange, laundry service, a children's activity center, and a travel/tour service. Most of the amenities are located on the public beach area of Akumal Bay.

    Water Sports:
Akumal is famous for it's easy access snorkeling and diving. The second largest reef in the world is at Akumal's doorstep making the reefs of Half Moon Bay and Akumal Bay a short swim from the beach. Yalku Lagoon offers spectacular snorkeling and swimming as well. Diving and watersports equipment is available at the dive shops.

    Akumal Attitude:
Dress is very casual in Akumal and the surrounding area. T-shirts, sandals and shorts are fine for all the local restaurants during the day. Sneakers are good for visiting the archeological sites. A light sweater or jacket is fine for a cool night. Be sure to bring sunscreen lotion and a few beach towels.
