Ajua Maya
Restaurant Rating:
Date of Visit: April 0
Restaurant Tip: "Ajua Maya Restaurant"
The Ajua Maya is on Calle 4 just west of 5th Avenue in Playa del Carmen. It looks like an average Mexican restaurant with a palapa roof, plastic chairs and tables, and lively Mexican decor. We were pleasantly surprised at the 5 star menu. They specialize in Mayan dishes. I had the lobster - prepared by a chef at our table. It was wonderful. The service was attentive and very friendly. Prices ranged from affordable to very expensive. The live music was amazing. They had a group of four musicians who looked to be of Mayan descent playing flutes and drums. Later they had a band from Mexico City that played Mexican versions of American classic tunes. This restaurant was one of the highlights of our trip.

La Casa del Agua
Restaurant Rating:
Date of Visit: February 0
Restaurant Tip: "Fresh seafood in a beautiful setting"
La Casa del Agua is on 5th Avenue. When I walked up the stairs to the 2nd floor dining room, I was amazed at how the décor (indoor waterfall, good lighting, natural materials) took me out of the busy busy busy mood of The 5th and into a tranquil place.
The servers were friendly but not pushy. The menu was eclectic… international and Mexican dishes with an emphasis on seafood. Everything we had was good.
I was impressed with the wine list. For some reason (the climate? shipping?) Playa del Carmen has notoriously bad wine selections, Not here! They had 100+ selections and will take suggestions from you about what to stock in the future.
A beautiful place to eat some of the best food in Playa! We'll be back!
Type of Restaurant: Seafood
Price: US$21-30
Favorite Dish: I loved the harts of palm salad, tortilla soup and shrimp in 4 pepper sauce. Everything was fresh and delicious.
Directions/Location: 5th Avenue and 2nd Street Playa del Carmen
