El Faro Hotel and Beach Club: In Playa del Carmen "El Faro Hotel ...Good Choice"

Accommodations Tip: "El Faro Hotel ...Good Choice"
My friend and I needed to getaway from the fridged north and on the spur of the moment we decided to jump on a plane and head down to Playa del Carmen for a few days.
We arrived in Cancun and taxied (approx. $50) down to Playa with no reservations or a place to say. We were tired and for the first night we stayed in a nice but small hotel on 5th Ave. I forget the name of this hotel. It was a small inexpensive - but nice/clean place that catered mostly to younger budget travelers.
The next day we were wandering the beach looking for slightly better accommodations and lo and behold we ran across this little gem of a hotel - The El Faro. The hotel is known for 'The Light House' located on premise at the hotel.
The El Faro is located right on the beach pretty much right in the center of things. It's a small hotel with about 28 rooms. Though we did speak with the owner and they we getting ready to build condos at the back of the property at the time.
Our room was clean, fresh towels daily. Small fridge. A balcony with a 'slight ocean view'. AC was arctic...no TV, which I actually enjoy when in the Caribbean.
The grounds are lush and very well maintained. I loved simply lounging about and soaking up the view of the pools and lush landscaping.
The beach area is quite nice and the hotel offers beach chairs and towels for it's guests. They also have a 'patio area' right above the beach that has beach chairs lined up in the sun or under some palm trees. Depending on our mood most of our days were spent simply unwinding out on this patio with a book and a seemingly endless supply of Caribbean cocktails from their bar - 'Las Brisitas'.
Las Brisitas, an ocean front palapa bar, turned out to be a great place to congregate from about 4pm till 7. It turned out to be a hub of activity as guests began to turn up for a happy hour cocktail. We sat and chatted with others while they relayed their days' adventures and since we were both Playa regulars we relayed our 'favorite' must do's - cenote trips, day trip to Pammul & Tulum, diving and snorkeling.
The restaurant 'The Pavilion' served up a tasty breakfast every morning and aside from some snacks it's the only meal we ate at the El Faro restaurant. The restaurant is located in an open air structure and also has tables out on the patio.
The staff was always friendly and helpful and quite professional for Mexico. Actually the bar tender turned out to be the biggest character of all and he always had a story to relay. We made our appreciation of his 'loquacious manner' known by way over tipping him.
I highly recommend the El Faro Hotel. It's not quite a 5 star rating - being a small non/luxury hotel it's just not quite there. But for travelers who want to be on the beach and don't want to stay in one of the all inclusive resorts and/or want to be in town this is a great pick!
Type of Property: Hotel
Price: US$101 - US$150
Address: Calle 10 Norte, Playa del Carmen, Q.Roo
Directions/Location: Located on the beach right near town. It's a choice location.

Ajua Maya
Restaurant Rating:
Date of Visit: April 0
Restaurant Tip: "Ajua Maya Restaurant"
The Ajua Maya is on Calle 4 just west of 5th Avenue in Playa del Carmen. It looks like an average Mexican restaurant with a palapa roof, plastic chairs and tables, and lively Mexican decor. We were pleasantly surprised at the 5 star menu. They specialize in Mayan dishes. I had the lobster - prepared by a chef at our table. It was wonderful. The service was attentive and very friendly. Prices ranged from affordable to very expensive. The live music was amazing. They had a group of four musicians who looked to be of Mayan descent playing flutes and drums. Later they had a band from Mexico City that played Mexican versions of American classic tunes. This restaurant was one of the highlights of our trip.
Type of Restaurant: Casual Dining
Price: not applicable
