Restaurant Tip: "shark and bake rocks"
When you get to Maracas Beach in Trinidad make sure you go to Richards. It's located across the street from the beach where your bus lets you off. I had read about the shark and bake in previous edition of Caribbean and just had to try it when our cruise ship stopped there. It's about a 30 minute drive from the cruise terminal. We booked an excursion from the ship to Maracas Beach. It's a great beach. Lots of big waves, but the real reason we went was to try the shark and bake. It was everything your magazine had said it was. Simply delicious. The lady said it was Mako shark. Deep fried in a light batter and served on an unleavened fried bun or bake as it's known locally. Another bonus is all the condiments available. There must have been 20 different ones. Lots of veggies and hot sauces to try. It was so big it fed both my wife and myself. I washed it down with a Guiness ale and my wife had an orange juice. The whole thing only cost 8 U.S. dollars. I gave our waitress a ten and told her to keep the change. That 2 dollar tip is 12 dollars in Trinidad money so she was pretty happy. If you get to Trinidad make Maracas Beach a must stop and definitely try the shark and bake. You will not be disappointed!!!

Restaurant Tip: "Sweet Lime really does have the Sweetest Lime (Hangout)"
My husband and I were on vacation in Trinidad when we decided to check out what we were told was the hottest entertainment strip in the country, Ariapita Avenue. Known as the Avenue, it’s located just on the outskirts of the capital. We came across a really interesting open air restaurant called Sweet Lime and we were attracted by the fabulous live entertainment going on and apparently we weren’t the only ones as there was a sizable crowd outside of the establishment. The restaurant was having a special event, called Wine and Jazz, which is held monthly. On entering this warm, casually elegant restaurant, we were greeted by a friendly hostess and directed to our table.
We were given excellent complimentary wine and a sizeable cheese plate to start. We delved into a creamy Caribbean Fish Chowder and Saltfish Accra (like a fried ball of salted fish, flour and seasoning)…delish! My husband ordered the Yara Bay King Fish, a really generous sized grilled kingfish steak with sweltering steamed veggies and hot out of the oven loaded baked potato. I ordered the curry lover’s meal, which I naturally fell in love with too. The chicken was very well seasoned in the local way and cooked to a tender perfection.
The prices were very reasonable and we are too excited about our next trip there. They have another location in La Romaine, South Trinidad and a website too – www.sweetlime.co.tt
