Restaurant Tip: "Don't miss this experience..."
wow..what a place. I was very impressed with their Martini menu, wine list and it just got better from there. After a few of thier starters, soups and salads, we decided to go back the next night for a main course. the service was second to none, and the friendliness was very welcoming. It was relaxing, and you waited for nothing....
Type of Restaurant: Other
Favorite Dish: Majic mushrooms (just had to try those) Maguro sashimi, garlic soup. and of course the salad..perfect..so perfect that you can purchase a bottle of the dressing. Fresh bread comes with butter and a special dipping sauce which we also had to buy to take home to friends..The second nite I had the special, which had "shrimp"...hmmm soo good...
Directions/Location: on the dutch side, right next to the bridge on the main street.

Restaurant Tip: "Magnificent"
We were taken to this restaurant and recommended by a taxi cab driver name Gus who lived near Grand Case. The whole experience was wonderful. Service and Food Exceptional. We arrived early about 4:30 and had the place to ourselves. The restaurant opens to the Ocean and if the sunset cooperates you will see a spectacular sunset. We were too early for this evening. However, all the hype about the Restaurants in Grand Case was made true by this experience. However, we found out two days later that not all the "famous restaurants" were earning their reputation. Such as the "Fish Pot" But that is another review.
Type of Restaurant: Fine Dining
Price: US$31-40
Favorite Dish: I had special lobster and shrimp in Thai sauce. Fantastic.
Directions/Location: On the main street on the water

Captain Oliver's

Restaurant Tip: "Captain Oliver's Highly Reccommended"
Captain Oliver's is on the French side at the French/Dutch border. It is located on Oyster Pond. The all you can eat seafood buffet on Sat. nights is fabulous. We loved it so much we returned and ordered off of the menu. It was just a good. It is situated on the water, and you throw your shells to the turtles and sharks. Service is fabulous and the live music each night was a treat. They gave us a complimentary picture (of ourselves) to hae as a reminder. We will return several more times this next summer.
Type of Restaurant: Seafood
Price: US$31 - US$40
Favorite Dish: Seafood buffet spread.
Directions/Location: Marina at Oyster Pond, on the French side.

Los Gauchos: In St. Maarten "Los Gauchos - Very Disappointed"

Restaurant Tip: "Los Gauchos - Very Disappointed"
We had heard good things about Los Gauchos, the Argentine steakhouse near the Pelican resort in St. Maarten. Wanting to explore some of the better restaurants on St Maarten, we decided to give it a try.
We were disappointed with the experience. For starters, the restaurant is very hard to find (poor signage and it's buried behind a non-commercial building and underneath a stairwell). Getting there reminded me of the opening credits in 'Get Smart'.
They had no problem seating our party of 5 (the restaurant was completely empty when we arrived at around 8pm). The service was friendly but very slow. Our 1st bottle of wine was bad and had to be sent back (in fact, the chef came out to taste it and agreed). Our second bottle of wine was barely drinkable. None of the staff had knowledge of any of the wines on the list.
My wife enjoyed the lamb chops and my sister-in-law thought the ribeye steak was ok. The rest of us ordered 12oz tenderloin steaks (their 'best' steak; 'equivalent to a filet mignon') medium-rare for $31 USD each (the prices on their online menu appear outdated). All 3 steaks arrived in completely inconsistent sizes and shapes. Worse, they were cooked poorly (one was practically raw, the others were nearly well done). Taste was so-so; for $31 per steak we all expected better. We didn't complain, though. After the long waits and the bad wine experience we just wanted to leave.
When the bill finally arrived (close to $250 USD... very expensive relative to the quality of our experience there) and I gave them my Amex card, I was told that there would be a 5% surcharge for using Amex and that I should use a different card. I told the manager that the surcharge violated their merchant services agreement with Amex and that we shouldn't have to pay it. She said "a lot of merchants on the island do it" and refused to budge (fyi, I wasn't charged a fee for Amex anywhere else in St Maarten). So, I paid in cash and left. None of us were satisfied with the experience.
