Robby Mar (San Pedro de Macoris)
Restaurant Rating:
Date of Visit: March 2005
Restaurant Tip: "an undiscovered gem"
Considering that the food at our resort left something to be desired, we asked the locals to recommend a restaurant, and they came back resoundingly with Robby Mar. While it does have an indoor seating area, I recommend the large outdoor patio overlooking the water. The owner (Tony) speaks excellent English, and is very helpful.
Price: US$41 and up
Favorite Dish: Since my wife is allergic to seafood, we had the filet mignon, and it was stellar. Cooked precisely as we asked. They served it two ways (cut into strips and individually wrapped in bacon), or covered in a wine/mushroom sauce. Both were delicious. Our travelling companions however wanted good Caribbean lobster and Robby Mar didn't disappoint. The price was extremely reasonable for everything. The lobster was prepared in many ways, but they settled for one order grilled, and another with garlic sauce. Robby Mar sells their lobster by weight, but that weight does not include the shell, they remove that for you. Another great selling feature was the wine. Resorts do not tend to have good wine. At Robby Mar, we were able to enjoy a good bottle or two of Chilean red. To ensure you get what you want, ask to see Tony, and he'll make sure his staff get it just right.
Directions/Location: It is located in San Pedro de Macoris (Sami Sosa's hometown). It is very close to the San Pedro Apostal church. Coming from Juan Dolio Beach, you can be there within minutes by bus (20 pesos each way), or by cab (300 pesos each way).
