Robby Mar (San Pedro de Macoris)
Restaurant Rating:
Date of Visit: March 2005
Restaurant Tip: "an undiscovered gem"
Considering that the food at our resort left something to be desired, we asked the locals to recommend a restaurant, and they came back resoundingly with Robby Mar. While it does have an indoor seating area, I recommend the large outdoor patio overlooking the water. The owner (Tony) speaks excellent English, and is very helpful.
Price: US$41 and up
Favorite Dish: Since my wife is allergic to seafood, we had the filet mignon, and it was stellar. Cooked precisely as we asked. They served it two ways (cut into strips and individually wrapped in bacon), or covered in a wine/mushroom sauce. Both were delicious. Our travelling companions however wanted good Caribbean lobster and Robby Mar didn't disappoint. The price was extremely reasonable for everything. The lobster was prepared in many ways, but they settled for one order grilled, and another with garlic sauce. Robby Mar sells their lobster by weight, but that weight does not include the shell, they remove that for you. Another great selling feature was the wine. Resorts do not tend to have good wine. At Robby Mar, we were able to enjoy a good bottle or two of Chilean red. To ensure you get what you want, ask to see Tony, and he'll make sure his staff get it just right.
Directions/Location: It is located in San Pedro de Macoris (Sami Sosa's hometown). It is very close to the San Pedro Apostal church. Coming from Juan Dolio Beach, you can be there within minutes by bus (20 pesos each way), or by cab (300 pesos each way).

DON'T GO. Pay additional money to stay at any other resort along this beautiful stretch of beach.
If you do go: pack lots of Immodium. Bring your own food. Finally, to rid the room of mold, bring candles and air sanitizer.
If you are allergic to mold: bring all your meds.
Avoid any room on the ground floor, as these are more moldy than the others.
Finaly tip: DON'T GO!
Check out all reviews negative and positive before going to Punta Cana. We will return in 2007, because the beach is brilliant, but we will stay at a 5 star.
Type of Property: All Inclusive
Price: US$101 - US$150
Unique Qualities: Mold in rooms.

Beach Tip: "Gilligan's Island in the Carribean"
We have traveled quite a bit and found the Bavaro Beach to be by far, the best. It is pristine, with many palms. The sand is powdery white and the water is turqoise blue. Somehow, even though there are huge resorts on this beach, it has managed to stay wonderful because Punta Cana has a rule: no building taller than the tallest palm tree.

I strongly recommend you know some Spanish and always have some money handy for tipping. You get much better service. If you don't do that you will receive poor service. If you have problems with your rooms you should constantly be on top of room service in order to get things done.
Type of Property: Resort
Price: not applicable
Unique Qualities: For young couples that like great looking resort with gorgeous beaches and great sport activity this would be place for you. The workers for the trapeze and rock climbing are great with kids.

Restaurant Tip: "The best in seafood and service"
Our friends do have a condo in Guyacanes right by the ocean and they have been to San Pedro many times. They took us to Robby Mar SRL restaurant on 9/28/10. Driving there the area did not look too clean until he turned the car into the parking lot of this place. They do have indoor seating but you need to sit outside under the large tent area by the water. The decor is wonderful and going in shorts and flip flops you almost look under dressed. We all had seafood and it was outstanding, the best whole red snapper I ever had and fresh. The wine selection was excellent, but let me tell you about the service - you think you are in a five star restaurant, the waiters attention to service, details and eye contact was unbelievably excellent. They did not come to the table to keep asking if you wanted something else. No, they stood at their wait station and all you had to do is look up and look into their direction. That is all you had to do with a little nod and there they came. We should send some of our wait staff there to train. I can't wait to go back there for the ambiance, decor, food and service.
Type of Restaurant: Seafood
Price: US$31-40
Favorite Dish: fresh fish prepared any which way. If it is fish I eat it
Directions/Location: San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic
