Restaurant Tip: "Mesa 17: Well Worth Finding"
A lot of foodie Cozumel regulars were saddened when La Cocay closed . . . but take heart!! Mesa 17, on Calle 17 (Sur) about 5 blocks up from the Malecon in the Corpus Christi neighborhood is a more than worthy replacement!
Trish and Glenn are truly gracious and welcoming owner/hosts, the setting remains untouristy and sublime, and the menu is far-removed from the usual Cozumel fare.
We ate there 3 nights during our recent week stay in Cozy -- probably would have gone more, had they not been closed Sunday and Monday, but we'll be back, as there are plenty more temptations on their menu we wish to try!
Glenn really does a fine job of combining classic technique, a playful sense of experimentation and fusing world cuisines, along with an insistance on using the best, freshest available local ingredients.
Favorite Dish: Yes, they had a fish dish (grouper when we were there), but theirs is yucca crusted to the lightest most delicate consistency imaginable and tops a vegetable polenta served in a tamale husk with a really outstanding assortment of sauteed (grilled?) fresh vegetables. Their brined pork, stuffed with blue cheese and prosciutto, is moist and wonderful (we repeated that on a second visit), and also comes with a terrific assortment of vegetables. Black bean hummous with plaintain chips was served as an opening 'amuse bouche' the nights we went.

Iberostar Cozumel: In Cozumel Mexico "Good Stay at the Iberostar"

Iberostar Cozumel
View Hotel Information: Iberostar Cozumel
Accommodations Rating:
Date of Visit: February 2004
Accommodations Tip: "Good Stay at the Iberostar"
I greatly enjoyed my stay at the Iberostar. The resort is beautiful with cabanas/buildings that each contained about 4 units. It's a large property spread out over a large area, so it's it can be a bit of a walk either to the beach or to the front of the resort depending on where your room is.
The food was average to good. Nothing to complain about but it was not fine dining.
I love the location of the resort. It's on the southern tip of the island and it's VERY close to the dive sites. Usually within 10 minutes you are on top of the reefs. Which beats the usual 25+ minute ride from the hotels farther north.
The staff was friendly and helpfull and perhaps one of the most professional on the island.
I find the Iberostar to be one of the most 'tropical' feeling hotels on the island. Though it's spread out it is has a great charm. Great pool area and bar.
Beach: Don't go for the 'soft sandy dream beach' if this is your thing. The sand is bit 'grainy' and hard but quite beautiful with palm trees fringing the beach. Once in the water there are small rocks lying about. Many people wore there 'beach shoes' in the water though not necessary.
Type of Property: All Inclusive
Price: US$201 - US$250
Unique Qualities: My room was more the fine and in good shape. A/C worked like a charm. Bed was a tad firm but not overly hard in my opinion. Clean. Fresh towels.
Diving was fantastic as usual and I had no problem with having my usual dive operator, Emerald Divers, come pick me up on the Iberostar pier.
Overall, I would recommend this hotel. For couples, singles and familes.
Address: Costera Sur, km. 17,785
Directions/Location: Southern end of the island

Restaurant Tip: "La Choza Restaurant is Great"
Family owned and operated restaurant serving traditional Mexican food and Yucatecan specialties...
I love this place and try to stop in at least once each time I visit Cozumel. Good food, open air dining and reasonable prices make this a good pick. Also, many locals dine here - a good sign in my book and the wait staff has always been really good.

Emerald Dolphin Dive Services
Scuba Rating:
Date of Visit: May 2004
Scuba Tip: "Diving With Emerald"
While I was staying at the Iberostar I dove with Emerald. They have a great crew and a good but average boat.
The personalities of the crew make up for the dings and scratches on the boat.
Type: Dive Operator
Favorite Cozumel Mexico Dive Site: For pictures without a strobe and alot of marine life: Tormentos or Yucab are excellent with tons of marine life (seahorses, many schooling fish, splendid toads, lobster, anemones, grouper, eel, etc.) and a nice sandy bottom...on a sunny day it's even better. For a deeper dive and for pictures of coral formations and larger marine life: Columbia Deep or Palancar (any section, but you will most likely need a strobe or two to get the right effects.
Address: 19 Sur No. 1134 Entre 25 y 25 Bis
Directions/Location: Tony and his dive crew will pick you up right at your hotel's dock if your are south of the Marina.

Playa Bonita
Beach Rating:
Date of Visit: February 2004
Beach Tip: "East Coast Beach"
Playa Bonita is a picture perfect half moon shaped cove with a white powdery sand shore, palm trees and a restaurant/bar just waiting for beach combers who want to relax and enjoy the day.
The water here in this cove is that amazing crystal clear Caribbean blue with gentle waves and very little undertow. This inlet is more protected than most other beaches along the east coastal road so it is safer to swim or play in the shallow water near the shore on a calm day. You may want to try body surfing in this area.
The restaurant serves an excellent variety of seafood, various "carne" meat and poultry dishes as well as other local specialties. The delicious house specialty is "Cocteles de Mariscos" or Seafood Cocktail.
Directions/Location: Look for the sign on the side and roof of the restaurant/bar on Carretera Costera Oriente - Km. 37 - El Mirador is first marked beach to the south, Chen Rio is north.
