Welcome to the Mayan Riviera located along the Caribbean Coast of Mexico....Enjoy!

Akumal, Mexico
Place of the Turtles...& Diving, Fishing or Exploring

Akumal, place of the turtles in the Mayan language, is where one travels to find quiet beaches, powdery sand, lush jungle, and friendly people.

Tropical life abounds in the protected bays where the most experienced snorkeler will find fulfillment, and  the youngest rookie can discover the beauty of the underwater world.

Your days can be as busy and varied as you choose, or as restful and unwinding. There are plenty of reefs, jungle, sacred Mayan sites all within easy reach of Akumal, and the natural setting almost guarantees unforgettable sunsets and moonlit nights.

Akumal is unspoiled in its natural beauty, providing all the comforts and services you will need on your vacation, and a true balance between tourism and the environmental conservation.

Akumal is a excellent destination for those interested in enjoying the Mexican Caribbean, located in the Yucatan Peninsula on the shores of the Caribbean Sea .  Akumal is located near the Mayan ruins of Tulum, Xel-ha, Xcaret, Chichen-Itza and Coba.

There is a crescent shaped beach called Half Moon Bay that is perfect for basking the sun. Akumal Bay is where sea turtles come to lay their eggs in the summer months...the bay also offers excellent snorkeling along coral reefs in the crystal clear Caribbean waters.  Biking is the prefered form of transportation and car rentals are available.

For the more adventures minded, take a trip into the jungle and explore the areas wildlife and fresh water cenote caves,  which are part of the largest underground cavern systems.  Fishing is excellent,  you are among Marlin, Sailfish, Dorado, King Fish, Barracuda and others just offshore.

Founded over 35 years ago, it has remained true to protecting earth's great beauties, while also providing a quality vacation in this special setting. For this reason Akumal has remained essentially the same through-out the years and remains unchanged since the development of the Cancun Tulum Corridor. It's reserved for those who truly appreciate a destination that does not need to be drastically overwhelmed.

Here you receive good tourism and welcome the traveler who is looking for an experience that will live on in the memory long after having left Akumal.

The temperature from September through April is about 80°F, and near 90°F during the remaining months. There is a continual sea breeze, and occasionally you will need a light sweater during the winter months.

Beautiful beaches, great snorkeling, majestic cenotes and great food... Akumal is still quiet and peaceful for those of us who want to "get away".

AKUMAL - take the most northern road (Club Akumal Caribe). The beach is beautiful. The water is clear, flat (protected by a reef) and you can snorkel the left side of Akumal bay (facing the ocean) all the way out to the reef . This was our favorite beach for snorkeling and swimming. Also enjoyed the beach bar for lunch. The Frajitas were the best we had ever eaten. A nice place to stay. Check out the Villas Maya hotel rooms and bungalows. Also check out the Club Akumal Casitas, on Akumal Bay & the Condos and Flamingo Villas about 1 Km north on Half Moon bay, (a beautiful bay). All at reasonable prices. Half Moon Bay also has good snorkeling from the north end out to the center.

YAL-KU LAGOON - 2 Km north of Akumal This inlet is fed by a Cenote or underground river that runs into the ocean at this point. The water is fresh, clear and full of colorful fish. You can swim all the way to the ocean where you will see some Sea fans and coral and possibly some larger fish This truly idyllic spot can also be reached by a road that runs near the beach from Club Akumal Caribbe. Make a left as you enter and stay to the left till the end (about 2 Kilometers). This stop is a must.

CONTINUING NORTH ON HIGHWAY 307 you come to 5 trails that lead to PUNTA XPU-HA. Take the 1st road north of Robinson Club & make a left as the road appears to end near the beach. The beach here is exceptionally beautiful and the water clear and fairly calm. This is ANOTHER GREAT PLACE TO SNORKEL AND SWIM (30 yards out and to the left of the beach bar as you look toward the ocean. We were the only one's on the beach except for one or two locals at a counter who appeared to be caretakers of the beach and charged us $1 each for entry from the trail, (well worth the price of admission). Good Restaurant.

CENOTE AZUL (blue cenote) - this cenote is a hundred yards on the west side of the highway and you will be asked to pay $1 to get to it. Worth the price of admission to slide into the SPARKLING CLEAR waters of this cenote. Go around noon or 1pm so that the sun's rays can penetrate through the jungle and deep into the water of this spring which has a bluish glow to it in the sunlight. You will see colorful fish and you can dive down to see the caves from which the cool waters enter the cenote. An interesting snorkeling experience.

PUERTO AVENTURAS - This area is highly developed with a large marina, hotels, shopping areas, condo's, etc. There is construction still going on and more Hotel's to be going up. Some say its too highly developed, but to me it looks like it might be a great place to stay to use as a jumping off point for exploring the rest of the coastal area.

PAMUL BAY - Another beautiful beach for swimming and snorkeling. Here too you will be able to enjoy the natural beauty of the area in solitude, as very few vacationers seem to spend time in this beautiful area.
