We all know that a lot of work goes into planning such events and Jacqui Pascall of SailGrenada (www.sailgrenada.co.uk) is phenomenal in this regard. Jacqui helps plot the courses and organize the kids’ activities. Since Jacqui works herself nearly to death, we are hoping to find a number of “Jacquis” this year, instead of just one.

WHY THE REGATTA? Fred Thomas of Shipwrights is the mastermind behind this Wooden Boat Regatta. Fred, Tall Mike and Poor Richard started the Sweetheart’s Regatta in Tortola in 1978, before West End existed -which has now grown into the Sweethearts of the Caribbean Regatta. Fred, master shipwright and hopeless romantic -of wooden boats that is- built in the tradition way, is one of those Old Timers whose work is his passion…and play. Fred is bent on keeping on keeping Tradition alive. He is hoping to have a Genuine Classic class (boats built years ago in the traditional way) or perhaps a Spirit of Tradition Class (newer boats built to show skilled craftsmanship but using modern techniques and materials, not strictly wooden boats). However, this depends on the number of such boats registered. A good friend of Fred, Foxy Caldwell of the BVI’s “Foxy’s Wooden Boat Regatta,” now in its 29th year, will be a featured guest host and entertainer.
