Hi everyone!
I'm cathy from the philippines. I'm a filipino-german. My family and I are moving to grenada at the end of this year. My husband will be working as a hemodialysis nurse for an american company at st georges.
We've never been to grenada so I have a lot, really a lot of questions in my mind right now. I really hope you could help me.
*if possible please list the prices in East Carribean dollars to avoid confusion. thanks!
1. I'm a simple person and therefore looking forward to have a simple life in grenada. Are there any apartments in grenada (2-3 bedrooms) available for EC$500-EC$1000 available? Some said that there are apartments available from EC$300-EC$500 available, is it true?
2.How much does one usually pay for electric,telephone and water bills in a month?
3. I have 2 children and therefore I'm curious about the schools in grenada. Somone told me that education in grenada is free for children. Is this true?
4. What is best to do for transportation? Rent a vehicle / buy one or take the bus? How much do they charge for busfares? What is cheaper to do?Are there regular buses available from early morning till late evening?
5. How much does one pay for internet service per hour? are there many internet cafes available?
6. Many said that persons going to grenada will experience "culture shock". What do they "specifically" mean by that?
7. Are there groceries, supermarkets, malls available?
8. How much money do you think do we need (we are 4 in the family, with 2 children with ages 2 and 3) for FOOD in a month to be able to survive there?
9. How much do they charge for entrance fees at bars and beverages?
10. How much do you think does one need to eat at a simple restaurant?
11. Can you give me some pricelists of chicken, pork, fish and vegetables per kilo? Also for bathsoaps and shampoos?
12. Are clothes (i mean with LOCAL BRANDS) expensive there?
13. What do you like most about grenada?
14. What do you like least about grenada?
15. What was your biggest challenge?
This is all i have to ask for now. I really hope you could answer my questions. It really would help me a LOT!

I am german, but live in Grenada for 14 years now, I have 2 kids, 1 yr and 10 years.
I hope I could awnser your questions without scaring you away, cause besides the high prices Grenada is wonderful.
I have an 2 bedroom apartment for rent from June, but that might not be for you since you come end of the year.

We had a major hurricane here in Grenada in 2004, since then our rates for apartments here went up a lot. so you wouldn't get anything desant for under EC$900 - 1500.

Electricity is very high here, about EC$ 150 monthly; telephone, local calls only $ 50.00, water $ 20.00

Public schools are free, you only need to pay for uniform & books, they are over crowded though, 40-60 children per class.
My ten-year old goes to a relatively chead but good private school withonly 11 kids in her class for $ 350 per term.

With kids it is recommended to have a vehicle, there are buses, but they don't travel late at night and don't really bring you everywhere.

you pay about $ 5.00 per hour or less in an internet cafe
6. Many said that persons going to grenada will experience "culture shock". What do they "specifically" mean by that?
Well we don't have theatre or opera here, just a small cinema, you can't go shopping like in a big country, but I think coming from the Philipines you might be used to that.
7. Are there groceries, supermarkets, malls available?
There are supermarket and malls, but the malls are quite expensive.
8. How much money do you think do we need (we are 4 in the family, with 2 children with ages 2 and 3) for FOOD in a month to be able to survive there?
Depending on you preverences about $600-800
9. How much do they charge for entrance fees at bars and beverages?
No idea, don't go out
10. How much do you think does one need to eat at a simple restaurant?
$35-50 per person
11. Can you give me some pricelists of chicken, pork, fish and vegetables per kilo? Also for bathsoaps and shampoos?
Chicken $4.5-5.5 per pound
Beef, perk & fish $7-8 per pound
Bath soap & shampoo $15-25
12. Are clothes (i mean with LOCAL BRANDS) expensive there?
Yep
13. What do you like most about grenada?
It's people, the country, beach
14. What do you like least about grenada?
Not being able to save much, not being able to go shopping and get what you want.

Hello Conny,
I just read your posting and I wondered if you kindly may of help for us.
We (me and my daughter, 11, are from Austria, and my boyfriend is from Barbados) are thinking of moving to Grenada soon, and I have so many questions, I would be so thankful if you could help us a little bit 
First of all I have to say that we were about to move to Barbados and already lived there for half a year. Unfortunately due to some problematic circumstances we had to leave the island and are now thinking of moving to Grenada. Regarding job I would already have something in mind, so that would not the problem.
What is my main concern is a good school for my daughter. It wouldn´t be that important for me that it is a private school, but like I experienced in Barbados already, the private ones probably are more safe? Could you recommend us some good primary schools there, private and public?
How much are the school fees per term for private schools, approximately?
We would be looking for a cheap 2 bedroom-house or apartment, preferably kind of a chattel house because thats how we lived in Barbados before. Simple and basic, but clean, and we have been very happy with it. We had everything and more when we lived in Austria, including an expensive car and luxury condominium, but now, living in the Caribbean, we are more looking to live a simple but happy life. Could you give us any advice of where to look for such rentals?
Then we would be looking for a job for my boyfriend, he is a car mechanic, but used to work as windsurf instructor, painter and landscape architect in Barbados. He is pretty open to what to do, and he is a hard-working person and a very good craftsman. He is Barbadian and so he would be able to work in Grenada without needing a work permit I suppose. Any tipps where to look for jobs (other than asking around) would be highly appreciated.
We will also need to buy a used car later on, how much do we have to calculate for it? In Barbados we had an old, but good working Misubishi Lancer from 1996, so we are also not into new and luxury cars 
Also how much is the car insurance per year?
Many questions, I know, but I do hope that you or another forum member can help us
