Tipping at Desire

Postby Jim on Fri Feb 20, 2004 9:23 pm

My wife and I are looking forward to our first trip to Desire this July. We have visied Hedo II and enjoyed it very much, but found the staff to be very uncaring, even rude sometimes. I understand Desire has a much friendlier staff. We want to be sure we are prepared to do the right thing by the staff, so please let us know what the tipping custom is at Desire. We also want to go out to the reef to snorkel. Is there a charge for someone to take us out? Do they take out couples or only small groups? Is it appropriate to tip the person taking us to snorkel?

Desire is “all inclusive” meaning tips are not expected. You will never find an employee even hinting that they expect a tip. You will never run into the old “jingling change in the pocket” trick. Tipping over and above the “inclusive” part is at your discretion. I have never seen anyone make a big deal over tipping nor does management discourage it. Personally, I tip those who I feel have gone out of their way to make our trip wonderful. Some people bring a stack of $2 bills, others fives. I believe word travels quickly among employees that a particular guest tends to reward those who provide outstanding service. On the other hand, I have never heard of anyone complaining that service was lacking due to non-tipping. Final word, tipping is at your discretion, not expected but highly appreciated.
