I've been trying to make honeymoon plans and thought i had found the perfect solution. Today, after talking to a sales rep on the phone, i agreed to the Summer Bay Orlando, Daytona, Bahamas package in addition to 5 days and 4 nights at the Park Royal in Cancun and an all inclusive trip in Costa Rica, in addition to a years travel insurance all for $1473. The sales technique was high pressure and time sensitive, but i had three years to use it all and so wasn't bothered about buying a little more than i needed, considering it all still came in way under any other quotes i could find. Yes, it clearly was not a real "prize" and i didnt expect to get something for nothing. However, after reading the reviews on this site and others (Though I have seen numerous very positive reviews too) and seeing that Summer Bay has an F rating with the Better Business Bureau I decided I really just didn't want to take the risk for the sake of a possible bargain and decided to cancel.
I used the customer care number they gave me during the initial sales call 18662803120 (I don't think it matches the one on their website greatvacationsnow.com. I called after their usual work hours but still got through pretty quick to "Chip" in quality assurance who was polite and cancelled the purchase for me without any grief. He did try to reassure me, and explained the situation behind the better business bureau rating, he also offered the Orlando trip on its own for $90 so i could try them out, first. It was actually a tempting offer, (like the original one) but I didn't want to commit to anything again at the moment, so I passed. Given the reviews i've read, i'll be watching closely to make sure it isn't charged to my credit card. My success may be due to the fact that i cancelled on the same day as the purchase, well within the seven day limit. But I cant complain.
I recommend anyone making a purchase on line or by phone use a credit card number, rather than a debit card. if they do turn out to be thieves the worst they can do is max out your card, which offers some protections usually, a debit card gives them access to your bank account.
Chip mentioned that Summer Bay had up till a few months ago held a B rating with the Better Business Bureau, but that a false report with them claiming that Summer Bay was in litigation in Missouri for ignoring no-call lists had caused the F rating, and they hadnt been able to get the better business bureau to fix it yet. I've seen that litigation in missouri is in fact on the better business bureau report for Summer Bay, but cant comment on whether its accurate or not. It does seem like they get an abnormally high number of complaints with the better business bureau though most seem to be resolved to the complainants satisfaction. I'd just rather pay more or go somewhere less exotic than risk the hassle. Hopefully the customer care number i gave above will help some of you.
