I love Xel-ha -that should be available in Costa Maya, it is often offered with Tulum(the only Mayan ruins ever built by the sea) which is beautiful, walk down by the beach. If they offer the all-inclusive pass at Xel-ha, get it. Meal , snacks, drinks, locker, snorkel gear(I always brings my own mask for better fit), and lotion.

Apply the sunscreen often! You have to use theirs because it is eco friendly. Years ago the fish started to die becasue of all the lotion and sun oil products in the water. Once they institituted the new polcy, the water became clear again and the fish returned.
It is not worth the risk to do your own tour to save a couple of dollars. If the taxi breaks down or gets a flat ---the ship sails without you.
With the cruise company tours--they will hold the ship because they wont sail without the whole bus if there is a flat.
That said, how often -do you get flat? -not often--but why risk it? It could be the difference of the best vacation and the worst vacation you ever had.
In Cancun, if they offer Xcaret-that is a good day!

I think..
If you are really into ruins go to Chichen-Itza--I haven't been there, but all of my clients chastise me for not going--everyone says it's a great tour.
If you do decide to do your own thing, allow plenty of time to get back to the ship and buy trip protection. AIG Travel Guard is very good! It is available through my website. The cruise company insurance only covers things purchased through them.
Bon Voyage!
