I am considering a trip to Punta Cana in July. Is the DR a fairly safe destination to consider? What about taking excursions?

Also, I see on the CDC website that there is some malaria. Do most people take the anti-malaria meds before going or do you not worry about it?

I've been there 4 times and never have taken malaria pills. If there are mosquitoes just use a spray. This works for me.
The people in DR are friendly although I have never rented a car to go somewhere on my own. I prefer the organized excursions from the hotel.
