Postby William on Mon Jan 19, 2004 4:17 pm

We will be going to the RIU Teguila this summer. Can anyone who has been there give us some information. Were you happy with the food/beach/room and etc? Thanks for any help. Also we would like to go deep sea fishing. Any information would be appreciated.

In regards to your upcoming trip to the Riu Tequila: I have been to the Yucatan Peninsula six times during winter and spring months. I must tell you that the Tequila was on the whole, an excellant value. I stayed five nights all inclusive and found the resort to be fantastic for only a four star rating. The drawbacks of the Tequila are few, the largest of which is it is not a beachfront property. This, depending on your motivation, was not a huge problem due to the Yucatan and i believe the other sister resort is the Playacar. The other two Riu's are beachfront, and share amenities with the Tequila, however, it is not just a hop skip and jump as I had thought. If you do go to the beach make sure to take everything you need, as the properties are large and the walk is a little longer than you might think. This is not to say the beach isn't worth seeing, it's an unbelievable paradise. Playa del Carmen itself is a smaller community, which is quite relaxing, but there are a few night clubs and small markets in town to satisfy any of your shopping and night life needs. As far as the Tequila property and services go, i cannot say enough! Outstanding! The employees were very helpful and kind, unlike other experiences in Mexico(rude to the U.S.). The food was the best i've had, more likened to a cruise than the standard cafeteria style of all inclusive. Unless you have made arrangements(do so very early) for the other dining areas(that are excellant!), you will be seated at tables for eight at the main dining hall, which was new to me and quite a wonderful experience. The selections are numerous and very appealing. Not hamburgers and hotdogs for the budget springbreaker types. The bars about the property are top notch including the pool bar. The pool is excellant by the way, just nevermind the iguanas, they are quite docile. The rooms were satisfactory, and always stocked with beers and booze and with an appropriate tip they will bring you as much as you can drink. i.e. lots and lots of bottled corona(much better than it's draft counterpart at the bars!). If your Spanglish is not so good, have no fear. There seems to be a fair mix of German and Scandanavian employees who are multilingual. You will find them at various service stations like the front desk and at the bars. The disco and entertainment were all great, and there wasn't the high pressure to sign for excursions. The resort activities (pool aerobics, contests, etc.) available were not forced on unwilling patrons either, which I appreciated very much. It is a very do as you wish and whenever atmosphere, with a mix of European, South American, as well as U.S., and as always, many very nice Canadian patrons. In the immediate area you will find more water, shopping, and excursion related activities than you can participate in during your stay. In summary, despite being off of the beach, the Riu Tequila comes highly recommended! Just one last bit of advice in case you have never been to Mexico... get a room safe asap and lock up everything that will fit and you absolutely can't do without, i.e. money, jewelry, cameras, film, i.d., in other words everything! While travelling anywhere, take only a little more money than what you think you may need, not enough to leave you high and dry if a local should decide to relieve you of your valuables. You must be aware of your surroundings at all times, remember you are being watched and any mistakes you make will cost you something. That is to say, if you leave anything unattended, unsecured, or otherwise out in the open, it will be gone without recourse. Only take what you need and don't stray from the beaten path!!! If you are in an area and don't see anyone like yourself, return to your resort and be thankful nothing occurred. I don't want to bash the local people, but if you have the money to travel, you are looked on as wealthy and an easy mark for someone who has very very little. One more major concern, if you are travelling with a woman, especially an attractive light haired woman, stay close! Blonde hair is somewhat of an anomally, and Mexican men are absolutely intrigued by this(the reverse is true of local women as well! I am blonde and have been treated almost as a celebrity by female resort employees) As you can imagine, this can cause conflict due to the relentless machismo that can take place. If you drink, the likelihood of a bad encounter increases by leaps and bounds. Do not go anywhere by yourself and do not! do not!1 leave your wife, fiance, or girlfriend to fend on her own! If you should encounter any trouble, go immediately back to the resort and start over! Do not count on local law enforcement to help you, it will likely add to an already bad encounter. Mexico is a beautiful place to visit! Just remember, you are no longer at home and the rights usually afforded you do not apply! STAY ON THE PATH OF TOURISM!!! Like I said before, I have been up and down the Suncoast and Yucatan, and these are my own experiences. Playa del Carmen is wonderful, beautiful place, and you will love the Tequila, just play it safe! I am returning to Mexico myself at the end of April, the Club Maeva near Tulum in fact. It's about 25 miles south of Playa del Carmen. Something about that area keeps me going back, despite the underlying dangers. I hope my resort account and safety dissertation is helpful to you, please let me know if you agree! Be safe and have a great trip!!!
