Yes i stayed at the hotel the first two weeks in October 2003. I regret to inform you it is run down, the staff are not very helpful, and that it is closing for much needed major refurbishment next May! The pool id reportedly being enlarged at the moment as it was miniscule, there is no facility for the promised waterski-ing as the boat has been broken for two years, the air conditioning units are like road drills and the whole building is showing that 45 years after being built it needs work badly. Nice location though!

Hi,

I stayed at the hotel in November 2003. Ok, so it's a little basic, but so is the rest of the Island. Everyone is so relaxed about everything and by the end of the week you'll feel the same - i.e. who cares!

The good points include: It's Tobago - fantastic beaches, amazing snorkelling, the wonderful jungle and an amazing array of wildlife. So, even if you're all inclusive, there is so much to do you needn't worry about the hotel.
Little tobago is very much worth a visit but beware of the local fisherman just waiting to charge you £40 for a return trip. However they do tend to keep to their word and pick you up exactly when you tell them to!

Hints and Tips:
* Check you know what times water will be available (the hotel has to limit it at certain times due to the Islands dwindling supplies).
* Probably not worth asking for Lobster at Dinner cause they never have it in. Also, if you choose a desert that isn't on the buffet, make sure they have it in stock and bother to get it for you.
* The TV room is up the stairs by reception. It also has the ping pong table in it (although it's a bit lop sided and acts as a sort of bucket collecting the drips through the roof when it rains).
* The air conditioning is very loud but it can be switched off (if you fiddle with the setting for long enough!). Ok, so that means it's very hot, but, we were able to get a fan from reception - much quieter.
* Make sure you negotiate a price with taxi drivers before you get in the car and also ask at reception what a reasonable price would be before you go.
* Ignore anyone who comes up to you on the beaches. Generally they are quite polite and the trips (and other bits and bobs they offer. watch out for the ice cream man at Englishmans Bay - you have been warned) are well worth hearing about. However, you will get the odd one that will pester you to death given half a chance. We found going into the sea, saying that we were all inclusive or that we were due to fly out that evening worked rather well. Generally the beaches are safe, we left our belongings whilst in the sea and (at Pigeon Point) even left them when we went to the Bar and for a look round the shops.
* Take plenty of sun tan lotion and a hat. Wear a t-shirt in the water - I wish I had! The sun is a killer out there and can fry you in minutes. Also a good pair of walking shoes is handy if your planning on tackling little tobago or the jungle areas.

As with everything there are downsides but personally I had a fantastic holiday and the hotel was part of that. Waking up and seeing the beach, ocean, palm trees and the pelicans diving for fish is just amazing. So much so that I've just arranged for my parents to travel out to the hotel in May. Might even see some Turtles then!

My return 'home' with my family for a vacation turned sadly into a major dissappointment. The hotel 'Rex Turtle Beach Hotel Tobago', literally threw out our already reserved booking as 4th time repeaters ! Explanations from staff that it was 'head office in England ' that made the error ! The reception staff really tried their best to accomodate us at another hotel and we thank them for their kind attempts. The manager after several attempts finally showed up and did apologized with promises for future discounts

This was like one nightmare to another, hospitality/ service at the Grafton Beach Hotel was lacking with exception of front desk staff, management was hard to find. Sad to say as frequent travellers it will be a while before we visit again.

yes, we stayed here in March 2004 and it was brilliant. Don't eat off the a la carte menu would be our only tip. The rest should all be enjoyed - to the MAX 216 style.
