I stayed at reef club last year. I thought the reef club was OK, but then again is was my first AI experience. Rooms are rather basic, but my parents have recently returned and said some of the rooms are begining to get refreshed so you might try asking for one of the newly renovated rooms. Definantly ask for a room on the 2nd or 3rd floor near the pool/beach..worth is even if you have to change rooms in the middle of your stay.
Food is OK, but if your a picky eater then you will have issue anywhere you stay. Plenty of choices, you won't go hungry. Go into Play del Carmen a few times for a change of dining experience.
Great grounds and great beach. Resort is on the smaller side compared to others so this is eitehr a good thing or bad thing depending on your taste. Many families since this resort offers a kid stay free deal usually.
This is not a palace type resort, but very comfortable and it will be tough not to have a great time. Relax..if you go with super high expectations you might be disappointed, but you would probably be disappointed at the Ritz or Trump Plaza if you go with lofty expectations. Your in Mexico, everything is a little different than the U.S. If you expect everything to be just like here in the states...recommend you stay in the U.S. If you appreciate the cultural differences and can easily laugh at yourself as well as the differences then you will have a great time.
Overall, this area is much better than Hawaii in my book. Better beaches, better service(mostly), interesting culture. Go with a good attitude, if things get a little messed up, just work with it...it happens when you travel, and it is really what you make the situation.

P.S. Tulum is great. The other ruins seems a bit far for me to invest an entire day. Rent a car, drive to Tulum...afterwords continue south for another 15 minutes or so and try to find a place called ZUMA's. Awesome location for lunch/dinner. Great food (no you won't get sick on the food) I great place to feel like you have really explored an off the beaten path type of place. Owned by an expatriot of the U.S. This experience made my trip.
We are going back with another family in April, this time staying at Iberostar Tucan. Have heard great things about this place (also in Playacar.) Enjoy....
