Reef at Playacar

Postby beth parker on Mon Jan 05, 2004 6:07 pm

I would like feedback on the Reef at Playacar. Am considering going there with 4 children in April. Interested in feedback on snorkeling along the beach near/in front of Reef at Playacar. thanks.

None. No snorkeling infront of Reef Club, or pretty much anywhere along the playacar AI coast line. No reef to be found, but there is a reef slightly south that has snorkeling. Reef club is decent overall overall, but there are several others to consider in Playacar. I stayed at Reef Club and thought is was ok, but for a few extra $$ I think there is something better to be found..

We went to the Reef Club Playacar in December with 3 kids. The food is buffet style and starts to get pretty boring after a few days. Take a break and go to Palapa Hemingway in town one night - it's great. Chef seems to be German but there were some Mexican choices as well. Snack bar was really bad except for the guacamole and the grilled chicken they keep hidden unless you ask. The entertainment is amateurish but exuberant and the kids disco was often cancelled for no apparent reason. Evening shows are indoors unlike many tropical resorts and really hokey. Kids Club is basically coloring and playing Nintendo, but as the weather was nice nobody cared. The place is fairly small and the kids were thrilled to have the run of the place and had a great time. The pools are nice and the beach is very pretty though there is no snorkelling there. We tried to take a boat trip to go snorkelling but there were red flag conditions most of the days we were there. You can take day trips to Xelha and Xcaret where you can snorkel (dead coral but lots of fish) in the lagoons and do other activities even if sea conditions are rough. Take a taxi to those places - it is a ripoff to pay the high rate charged on the bus tours and you have to drop off at other hotels. The Reef Club was more than adequate for the money as a moderate-priced resort and we all had a very nice time despite some shortcomings.

You will need to take a tour south to get great snorkeling. I went in front off the beach but mostly white fish. Did take a snorkel tour and loved it. I like the Reef Club. We have been there 3 times. This year we took a cruise, but next year in Feb or March we will be back to the Reef We love it. Enjoy yourself. Jim
