Rebuilding Cozumel from Hurricane

Postby Guest on Tue Jan 24, 2006 11:46 am

I am thinking of traveling to this area and am not how decimated it is from the recent hurricanes. Has anyone been recently, and if so is it worth traveling down there, or is a majority of the hotels, attractions, etc closed???

Thanks for any and all info!

Cozumel and the Mayan Riviera were hit very hard by 2 cat 5 hurricanes within 12 weeks of each other. However, The govt. sent every worker they had from the mainland and has dramatically restored the area to that tourists can come back and visit. All services are up and running. Around 20-25 cruise ships are now visiting everyweek. I would feel comfortable to book a trip here.

Salud!

Man!!

I am so tired of everyone saying the island is COMPLETELY DESTROYED yada yada yada

The island is about 80 to 90% back to normal people. Yes, there was a hurricane and we had damage no doubt about it but most things have been repaired and most businesses are up and running and have been for quite a while. Most be good enough for Carnival, NCL, and several other cruise ships because they bring their people EVERY DAY.

the only exception are a few of the hotels are still not open but most will be in the next 30 days.

As for Playa Del Carmen they hardly even got hit. Most of the damage was in Cancun and Cozumel.

We visited Cozumel for a day 2 weeks ago (Jan 25). We stayed at the substituted Mayan Palace for a week and wanted to see how our El Cid La Ceiba was doing. We have stayed there for each of 16 years and long for the experience again. We walked from the downtown ferry pier to the La Ceiba ( about 2 miles). All of the Cruise Piers are damaged to the extent that they are not being used at this time. We were surprised at how well the downtown looked. It appeared to be completely functional but hurting for customers. Some of the resorts on the way south are open. Some are closed. The La Ceiba is to open April 8 according to an email from them. They have a LOT of work to do as one of the pools was swept out to sea. The dining palapa is no where to be seen. They are working to get the rooms ready. Across the street, the Park Royal has a sign saying it will be open Summer 2006. They are using this time to restore the large main building that has been in ruins since Gilbert.
It was amazing to see the extent of damage to the southernmost cruise pier. There is very little left. I would have loved to post a picture of it but I can't get it down to 256K and still recognize anything
