I've been in Puerto Adventuras (the small town where the Dolphin Discovery is in the center) and eaten & shopped there. I've also stayed in the Barcelo Maya and Adventura/Spa Palace (both which I highly recommend-the Barcelo's beach is wonderful, but their building an additional 800? rooms in the Spring).
