Planning our first trip?some advise please?

Postby pasties on Wed Jan 11, 2006 6:17 pm

Hello Everyone,

Myself and my girlfriend are planning our first trip the the dominican republic this year but what im asking here is just some basic advise, i have bought the guide books and read amny artcles upon articles but was just after some honest answers from you all?

We are thinking of traveling on July 7th 2006, What is weather like, are we safe from the hurricanes?

We are planning to stay in the north of the island, possible the dorada area but that area is based on what i have read about the north at that time of year? any other suggestions would be appreciated?

I have read amny hotel reviews on the internet but am slightly sceptical was just wondering if anyone could recommend any hotels?

thanks in advance

We've been to the DR 2 times now, once in sept 03 and once in june 05. Our second trip was for our wedding, so it must be good.

We stayed at the Sun Village Beach resort (Web site is the same as the name!!) on both occasions, and we found it perfect. it has 7 pools, 9 bars and about 5 restaurants! it really is wonderful.

there's also Ocean World just down the road where you can swim with Dolphins (which was excellent) and load of other excoursions as well.

Hope i was usefull!! have a great time wherever you go (but i highly reccommend sun village)

dominican republic

I would not visit the dominican republic if I was you. Pick a much safer place. My husband went with a few friends in Sept. 2002 and their motto the entire visit was "Let's just make it home alive". There are much better places to visit in the Carribean. I would go to Turks & Caicos, even Curacao, any place other than DR.
If they know you are American (or British), they will harass you and try to get your money if you go outside of the resort areas. It's just not safe there. And this is advice coming from New Yorkers.

Be very careful!

Dominican Republic

I have been to the North Coast of the Dominican Republic many times and have never had a problem there. I felt safer there than in Manhattan.
Please do not let the previous post detur you from considering the D.R. as a destination. I do not stay in all inclusive resorts. Who knows what this womans husband was doing there or where he stayed etc. I always rent a car and do some traveling. From Puerto Plata to Samana a very special place. The Dominicans are a very warm and friendly people. I would suggest you read some of the posts on www.dr1.com.

My girlfirend and I already booked out first trip to the DR. We picked the Secrets Resort (6 star, couples only) after talking with several friends and co-workers who have been there. We're going the first week of May so I'll post a full review as soon as I get back. Here's their website in case anyone is interested!! http://www.secretsresorts.com/

If you go to the DR in July you will be perfectly fine, the hurricane season is really one month september. In more than 70 years all of the DR hurricanes have been in September, so relax, visit it go outside of the hotels visit Samana and Las Terrenas, the Colonial city (the first city of the new world with the Columbus Alcazar and the museum of the royal houses)

Enjoy paradise!!!!!!!!

Last November we stayed at Breezes in DR, and I highly recommend the resort. It is all inclusive, there are 7 or 8 resturants to choose from plus the buffet. (make sure you make your reservations before 4pm or your out of luck) the food was great and the service also.

The hotel is huge, with close to 1000 rooms and it is not too pricy. Definitly worth a look

I am a canadian hotelier, living in DR for almost 4 years: What the hell are you talking about??? Bad experience, isolated case I guess.

6 stars properties are the fruit of the imagination of a well seasoned marketing manager: They do not exist, Period.
The world classification of hotels and resorts varies from country to country. Here in DR like anywhere else in the world, 5 stars is the maximum rating. Now Secrets resorts are to my opinion the better managed in the whole country, excellent service I would recommend the place to anyone.

Go for it.

Hello Pasties...

During the month of July the climate is awesome and pleasant. So,you don't have to worry about this. But,as the August month starts, monsoon enters here with storm and people have to face hurricanes.Sorry i have no much idea about the "Dorado" island.I can only suggest or recommend some hotels to you and they are,

Renaissance Jaragua Hotel | Dominican Bay | Meliá Santo Domingo

With Regards,
Mack Bosh.
