New Riu Cancun

Postby LER on Sat Apr 19, 2003 11:00 pm

Does anyone have any info on the new Riu Cancun? I think it opens mid-May. I am going to stay there in the end of June. I am curious if anyone knows anything about the property. Also curious what the beach in that area is like. Thank you:)

We too have booked a holiday to Riu Cancun on July 22nd this year with First Choice. We've had that letter too! Any pictures we have seen at the oment don't show any building work but we are still trying to find out exactly what is going on. Try looking up www.riubambu.com for info and reviews - there is lots of useful information there.

I returned to my travel agent on staurday and took the letter along with me to find out exactly what is going on! They contacted first choice and they explained that there is builing works surrounding the riu cancun. Builing works are rated between grade 1-5 (1 minimum being minimum disturbance and being major builing works). The works have been graded at a level 1 as at now. However, they said that you will be able to see the builing construction from all areas of the hotel. I personally asume that if you can see it you'll be able to hear it as well!!! We have now changed our hotel to the Grand Caribe Real resort & spa, as I personally was advised by the travel agent to move,as she said she would if it was her. Hope everyone has a lovely holiday wherever they go, and hope this has helped.

There seems to be 5 more pictures on the official website www.riu.com
It looks pretty good and at least looks nearly finished.
I am not cancelling due to the building works and I assume it can't be too bad.

People, please don't worry about the noise. I know people who have been in touch with the manager of the hotel and he assures everyone that construction is virtually finished and noise is not an issue. The hotel looks amazing and is in a great location. Take a look at some of the pics on the Riu website, the place looks like paradise. Enjoy yourselves!

We stayed at the new Riu for four day Memorial Day week-end. As to cnstruction and noise, that was not a problem. The property, rooms, pools and location is fabulous. However, I feel they were not ready to provide their guests with adequate services. The phone in our room did not work, either to send or receive calls, a key was not avaiable for the room safe and it was imposible to get softdrinks or water for our in-room refrigerator. However, the beer and liquor seemed to flow freely. We were surprised and disappointed with the quality of the food. To their credit, maybe the Chef's need additional training. It will be interesting to see if this property lives up to their 5-star rating in the next few months. Hopefully, these issues were due to their just opening. I wish we had waited a few months to stay there.

I found this review on www.caribline.com
which thrilled me because I am going for a week on 6/22/03-6/29/03 and I will post my review when I get back for those of you going after me!

Riu Cancun 06/02/2003
Reviewers Rating: Excellent
We stayed at the brand new Riu Cancun from 5/24/03 - 5/31/03 and loved it! It was like being on a cruise ship in port at all times. The food was excellent with plenty of choices. There was a different show each night in the theater and lots of fun dancing in the disco. The service was magnificent. The swim-up bar is a must. We also enjoyed the company of nice and fun guests staying at the resort. A great time! We will return again.

I stayed at the Classy RIU Canucn June 1-8. This is a true 5 star hotel with out the noise of spring breakers or high school grads. This hotel would not attract that type of crowd.
Here goes some things that I would like to point out.
Excellent location.
Shows were great.
Maid service was prompt and excellent.
Free safe provided in each room.

Animation/staff were very friendly.
A lot of daily activities to keep you busy such as Tennis, ping pong, water polo, beach volleyball, bingo, rifle shooting, horse shoes, water areobics, and non-motorized water sports.

The food was incredible, and they offered a large variety of Mexican, Italian and American cuisine.

A free mini-bar is also included in the room which is stocked with water, Corona beer, soda, and 4 bottles of Mexican brand liquor (Rum, Brandy, Tequilla, and Vodka).

Regarding the construction, dont let them place you in the main building which faces the construction. It is an eye sore. Reguest to be in the main building facing the main pool, or in the 6 story building which have connecting rooms and Jr. suites. I was given a junior suite at no extra charge which had a perfect view of all the pools and you would never know that construction was going on.

Rather than take the chartered bus service back, you can check out an 1 hour later, and have a cab take you to the airport for 200 pesos or $20 USD. This will still leave you plenty of time to check in.

Drawbacks:
1) Hotel only had Mexican brand liquor, no top shelf.
2) No pool or room service.
3) A lot of broken glass on the beach, especially in the volleyball area.
4) Construction view/noise if you get a room on that side of the hotel.

Final word: A++++++++++
Overall the hotel food, service, entertainment, and room were excellent. Have a great time!
