What you have to understand is that Jamaica is very dangerous. You will not get any useful college degree there. I live in a tourist area, and a lot of Jamaicans come here to work. Pay is low and hours worked are high. You had better rethink your plans

Well she would say that wouldn't she!!

Unfortunately, Jamaica is a dangerous place, the private sector manage to keep the lid on the danger so it is pretty imperceptable to the average tourist, but for example I have had my left breast pocket ripped off my shirt, less than 100metres from Sam Sharp square in centre of Montego Bay, outside a major electrical retailer at 10.30 am in the morning surrounded by people, I had obviously been watched in the bank and for the 1 kilometre+ I had walked including visiting a supermarket and my J$6000 had been well cased. The police didn't do much cos they don't go in the ghetto town in central Mo Bay, the guy ran into, too scared.

However, to answer your question, things are changing The Murder toll and gang warfare in Mo Bay is growing fast as they move out of Kingston so I suggest you wait for three years before you make your evaluation. As in all third world countries things change fast .

Check: www.jamaica-gleaner.com and www.jamaicaobserver.com for an idea of what is happenning. 8)

By the way the Observer is owned by Butch Stewart who previously also owned Air Jamaica, get the picture?!!!!!

From Jamaica Observer: A significant majority of Jamaicans identified 'crime and violence' as the number one problem facing the country, with joblessness a distant second and poor leadership an even more distant third, based on the most recent Stone Polls.

I would expect a person who has a Jamaican flag next to their name to say nothing but good things about Jamaica but the truth is, Jamaica is a crime ridden country. Thir Private sector does a good job of keeping Jamaicans out of tourist areas. I remember going into a mall in Ocho Rios and the security guard letting me and my wife in and stopping locals and making them walk through a metal detector or even turning them away. They will target non-jamaicans. A freind of mine told me he was looking for T-shirts and a guy put a bad of weed in his hands and wanted money for it. The University there will not provide you with a degree you can use outside of the Caribbean and it is located in Mona, Kingston which is far away from the tourist area. Kingston is the highest crime area. The island is beautiful and great for a visit with a lot of care but not a nice place to live.
