Just got Back

Postby Hardy on Wed Jun 18, 2003 11:21 am

Hey, we loved it! We got there at midnight on Wed and left on Monday @ noon. We enjoyed every minute. Just walk around smiling all the time and you will find that everyone smiles back. The resort is 3 years old and the first year it "did" have some problems. For example, the beach area had some sharp rocks which made it hard to walk and impossible to swim in. Now most of that has been removed. The employees are egar to please and love to joke around. Just go with the flow. This place is designed for couples and is every quite at night, except for the main bar - it closes at 2am. We attented a wedding at another place just down the beach and weren't around to eat the evening meals, but breakfast was always pleasant. The coffee is alittle stout at La Isla, so we would usually fix our own in the room, then switch to Bloody Marys or just plain OJ when we got to breakfast. There is a free shuttle from the resort to Playa del Carmen that leaves at 6 and returns at 11pm. A taxi is $18 one way to PdC. For us, the best way to get to Tulum was by cab to PdC, then take a bus from there. That was the plan at least, however, once the cab arrived the driver offered to take us the whole way for $35, not the regular $60 something listed on the taxi menu at the hotel. Hint: The way to remember how to pronounce Tulum is to hum the Pink Panther song, Tulum,... Tulum, ...Tulum-Tulum-Tulum-T-u-l-u-m. If you want to make an immediate friend, ask for Jose at the main bar and tell him that everyone is talking about him on the message boards then throw a few bucks down after the first drink. He will remember you the rest of the trip and treat you especially well. Sexy Fernando is the activities director (bald headed with 2 large earrings) - he has a busy job and not much time to talk, but he loves to hear that people know about him from the internet. He's a transplant from El Paso, TX. It was way too late for our taste, but on Thursday nights he offers a shuttle into Cancun from 11 - 3am to hit the bars and shake up the nightlife. Our room was a Gardenview, very nice with a shower that would hold 6 of your favorite friends and a jacuzzi (candles inclued) that is perfect for 2. We used room service a couple of times after midnight with good results, it's available at no charge. We even ask for a few things that weren't on the menu with no problem. If you have any questions email me. Otherwise, have FUN.

Glad to hear from a recent trip. I have several rooms booked for 7/28 through 8/3. Reading other trip reports, several have indicated there are overbooking problem and to beware of going to this resort. Did you hear of any issues? I understand that there is nothing a person can do if this occurs. I would like to talk the Hotel manager to see what they have to say but I do not know how to get a hold of him. Any ideas?

People get together around the pools & bars, etc. No harder to meet people there than anywhere else. As for concerns about overbooking, it didn't happen to us, but if you would like to speak to the manager the phone, fax, and e-mail address for the hotel are all posted at the top of this message board. They may not understand your spanish, but speak english very well.
