We were at the EDR January 21-28, 2004. I was a little worried because of the mixed reviews, so I thought I would add some input here in case it helps anyone.
The El Dorado was a nice resort, but I wouldn't give it 5 stars. The property is beautiful, very clean, and the staff couldn't have been nicer. I can't believe some people thought they were rude.
We stayed in a Garden View Jr. Suite, and it was quite nice. We really loved the jacuzzi, and used it every day. The room was a bit musty, but that is just Mexico. Nothing to worry over.
The "sewer" smell that I had read about...they really do need to do something about that. I would have been upset if I had paid more for an Ocean Front or Casita, and had to deal with that smell (another reason I was happy with the Garden View room).
The food wasn't bad, but it wasn't anything to get excited over either. We had a few things that were quite good, but most everything else was average and I think could stand some improvement. The oriental restaurant was quite charming, and I think the food there was the best that we had.
Most of the crowd was 30's and 40's...I don't think we saw any honeymooners, and there were quite a few older couples. So it's not a place for singles looking to hook up with someone.
I wish we had gone with a group of 2-4 couples, as the night life wasn't quite right for us. The shows were fine, but there wasn't a whole lot to do afterwards unless you were drinking alot.
The timeshare people weren't really a problem...you could always tell them no, and they weren't obnoxious about it. The timeshare people at the airport however, were unreal! They dressed so that they looked like airport officials (black slacks, white shirt and black tie, airport badge), and cornered us, asking to see our documents. Watch out, or you will miss your ride to the resort!
All in all, we had a nice time, but even after spending a lot extra on excursions, we were a bit bored. If you are more into laying around the pool or beach, or if you have a group with you, you would probably be happy. We will probably look into some other options though, if we return.
