Ahoy everyone! I'm trying to find the location of an old pirate fort on Tortuga, the island near Haiti. Back in the 1600s a fort named Fort de Rocher (or Rock Fort) was built by the pirate La Vassuer. I have read accounts that say its foundation exists to this day. I have combed every inch of the island with Google Maps in an effort to spot those remains. I am hoping that someone here might have some knowledge of where to look, or that maybe someone can connect me with a person or business that would know.
Here is what I know of the fort:
- it is within a mile of shore
- it sits atop a rocky hill
- the main mountain on the island is taller than the hill with the fort
- it might overlook Basse Terre or it might be about three miles down the coast from it (it is said to overlook the "natural harbor" which some accounts name as Basse Terre and others do not)
- it is on the south side of the island (i.e. facing Haiti)
- a Z-shaped road led to it (which may or may not still exist)
I'd really appreciate some help and none of the pirate forums I have visited have been able to assist me. So have I come to the right place seeking help? Does anyone here have any knowledge of Tortuga or know anyone who does? I'll even be grateful for links to pictures of the island or the fort.
