Family safety and security - tulum area?

Postby fivechris on Mon Jul 31, 2006 9:17 am

We are considering renting a beachfront villa (the one's that include a housekeeper/cook) early next summer. We've done the same in Cayman, Aruba, Bahamas and throughout the US.

We live in Texas and hear so much media about violence and crime in the border towns of Mexico (and sometimes in Cancun). To what degree do we need to be concerned about this in the Tulum area. We will be travelling with our two teenagers and one younger child.

Our plan would be to rent a car in Cancun, hit the grocery store and head south. The beachfront homes look fantastic, and appear to be very affordable as well.

thanks for the feedback.

Tulum is fine - most of the Yucatan has well developed tourism infrastructure and is safe for tourists. As with anywhere though, take care at night.

Best place to buy some food is Sams Club near Playa de Carmen. Bring your membership card. It is on the highway (left side if you go South).

Do not speed up. I saw this Spring many police cars on the road.
