Hotel Riu Cancun

Postby James thorp on Mon May 26, 2003 1:59 pm

We are going to stay at the Riu Cancun Hotel for 2 weeks in July. We believe it opened in May. Has anyone stayed at this hotel and if so what did you think of it? What were your thoughts on Mexico and are there any trips you would recommend?

We spent our Memorial Day week-end at the Riu Cancun. I do not think they were prepared to open. They did not live up to their reputation for stellar service, quality of food. However, the rooms, pool area and beach were fantastic. Also, word of caution, we were told the city buses were perfectly safe fr us to ride. We were robbed at 3:00 in the afternoon on a full bus. Perhaps you know better: Our mistake: The bus was full, the man had a coat on his arm, and took a knife and slashed down the side of my sister;s bag, reached in, grabbed, her wallet and fled out the back of the bus at the bus stop. After the fact, we were warned this is a COMMON OCCURENCE and technique. Forewarning would have been nice. Hopefully, the Riu Cancun will be ready for you and your trip will be wonderful. We learned not to stay at a new hotel early on.

Whenever you travel to Mexico Do Not carry a purse or bag. Take a money belt and wear under your clothes or put money in shoe or bra. Carrying a purse or bag is too easy for people to rob you. There are a lot of poor people in Mexico and this is how the get money for their families. If you carry your money/papers smart you will not get robbed. I have traveled all over Mexico and even spent some time in Mexico City with no problems.

I have a response for Jean and Glenda's comments...I live in Mexico, Monterrey to be exact, I've travelled all around Mexico and I've never been robbed, I've been robbed in the US and in Europe, but not in Mexico, and yes there is a lot of poberty in my country, that doesn't mean everyone will be waiting to rob you...that is a complete lie. This Hotel is great, I highly recommend it, and believe it I've been to hundreds of hotels in really exotic places.

Just return from a week at the riu Cancun and all I can say yous will have a great safe holiday at this resort.
Lots of nightlife and shopping (huge mall)right across the street and lots for children activitys at the resort.
Food and saervice is second to none and the rooms and sheets are cleaned daily.
Beach is super clean and has the finest whitest sand you ever felt between your toes!
Have fun and you will ENJOY your stay there no questions asked!

Do all the rooms have an oceanview? I've checked trip advisor and everything else, but I only know of standard rooms or junior suites. It doesn't clarify if the have oceanviews. Thanks for any information you can provide.
