My flight won't arrive in Cancun until 6pm and I am staying at a B&B near Tulum. I assume sunset will be around 8pm which may still find me on the road after dark. Is this too dangerous?

Ulrich,

It's not dangerous as in "too" dangerous. Just use common sense on the road. In recent years Hwy 307, than main road going south from Cancun, has been greatly improved.

After dusk you will want to drive slower because of the topes or speed bumps in the road. Most of them are marked but some are not.

Also, pay attention to the side of the road as people will be walking there on there way home from work.

And if you are driving slower than local traffic just let them pass you.
