Well, each have their benefits. We have been to both once, and have stayed at about equally expensive resorts (AI)

Cuba - Varadero

Coralia Club Playa de Oro Review and Pictures

Dominican Republic - Punta Cana

Grand Palladium Bavaro Resort and Spa Photos and Review

Enjoy. Post some of your "criteria" if you would like a more detailed commentary.

By Far the DR is better, there is much more to see in many departments, but to see the real people and the real island the DR is a better place, in a breakdown I would say:

1) Nature: it is so easy to travel between the island of the dominican republic, the roads are better and there are small hotels eveywhere, in Cuba you only have the large hotels.

2) Food: In the DR you can find all types of food since in all of the island, in cuba this is a problem due to scarcity of many imported goods.

3) Scuba: for the same reasons you can scuba anywhere in the DR and there are many galeons and sunken ships to see.

4) Culture: I would say it is close in this category as both have good museums and the old city are very interesting, Cuba may have a larger old city and the DR has an older one.

5) People: they are both very nice and welcoming, there is more opennes in the DR for obvious reasons.

I hope you enjoy your trip!!!!!!!!!

In Cuba there is small hotels everywhere also, its true though that the roads are better in DR.

2) Food: In the DR you can find all types of food since in all of the island, in cuba this is a problem due to scarcity of many imported goods.
Also True for food, but in every medium or big city of Cuba you find excellent restaurants.

3) Scuba: for the same reasons you can scuba anywhere in the DR and there are many galeons and sunken ships to see.

Cuba too, more spots, more shore Cuba is 3 times the size of DR.

4) Culture: I would say it is close in this category as both have good museums and the old city are very interesting, Cuba may have a larger old city and the DR has an older one.

Well here in DR, there are no culture or almost not. I think we are mixing up culture with history here. Dominicans are "AMERICANS-WANT-TO-BE" while Cubans are proud of being Cubans, they are the masters of the arts, musics, dancing.
I suggest that you look at that site: http://www.soycubano.com

5) People: they are both very nice and welcoming, there is more opennes in the DR for obvious reasons.

Very true

I hope you enjoy your trip!!!!!!!!!

To finish my comments I have been living in both places for work reasons, in cuba you deal with much more educated people, but dominican are more loyal top their friends.

As far as there is to see from a tourism side if you go to Cuba :

Try the Casas Particular, much cheaper than hotels with plus or less same comfort. You'll learn more about the Cuban life.

In the DR I find that they look at you like a dollar sign everywhere you go except for some people in Santo Domingo and Santiago that are really filthy rich!!!

Cheers

Never been to Cuba, but we travel to DR often and love it.
The country is getting better all the time, a lot of things to see, epecially in Santa Domingo (the oldest sity of New World) and Puerto Plata, Sosua and Cabarette on the north (Amber) coast.

I've never been to Cuba but from what I've heard DR is a better place for tourists. The food is better and if you go to a 4 star hotel in DR you have to go to a 5 star hotel in Cuba to get the same treatment if you know what I mean.
