Can anyone tell me anything about RWI?

Postby Sarah on Thu Mar 17, 2005 7:25 pm

We'll be going to Provo in June and staying in Building 1 at RWI on the 2nd floor. I have several questions:
Is there a shuttle to town or the grocery store? If so, is this the Gecko shuttle? Would we be better off to rent a car? I've read that you pretty much need a 4x4 there due to bad road conditions. Is there a car rental company that is recommended above the others? What does RWI have on its premises as far as a bar or restaurant, gift shops, access to nearby restaurants or shopping, etc. I'm a T&C novice and know nothing!!
Thanks for any help.

Definitely rent a car! By the end of the week, it will have paid for itself just in money saved from taking cabs, the Gecko, etc and in HEADACHES from the above! You don't necessarily need a four-wheel drive and TRUST ME... even if you ask for one and PAY for one that guarantees NOTHING. We asked for a jeep and got a mini - go figure. The roads are pretty rough, but the cars can handle them. You have the right idea about going to the grocery store. The restaraunts can be VERY expensive and are hit and miss for quality. THere are a few that you definitely don't want to miss while in Provo, though. Smokey's on Wed. for the fish fry...Barefoot Cafe in the AM for coffee (the BEST) and homemade muffins...and of course, Bugaloo's for seafood. Also, don't miss dinner at Caicos Cafe at Ports of Call - the owner is a wonderful french woman who has a first class staff and makes great food. If there's anything else you'd like to know, feel free to email me or ask! I had a great time in Provo once I got the "hang" of it, and by that I mean learning what to expect and what not to. :-) S

We had a rental car from Avis waiting for us at the airport & we stopped at the market on the way to RWI & kept the rental car for two days. We ate at turtle cove restaurants & Bugaloos for lunch & used the car to snorkel at turtle cove. There is not much to see so you dont need the car long.Hemmingways has the best food.

I stayed at RWI last May and am returning again this May. There is a shuttle from RWI to the grocery store that costs $20. IGA is open seven days a week 7am - 10pm. No liquor sales at IGA on Sundays.
The Gecko Shuttle does not go to the grocery store. It runs all along the resort/beach area from Ocean Club down to Turtle Cove. Check it out at www.thegeckotc.com. You can buy a 7 day pass for $33/person. There are also family rates. I think in June it would not be busy and you should be able to catch it every 15 - 30 minutes, depending on where you go. There is a restaurant, Mango Reef, at RWI. Had a few meals there, but remember you are on island time so service may be slower than you expect.
Also pack light, as the units have washer and dryer so you can do laundry.
Dress is very casual.
There are Hobie cats (sailboats) and kayaks at the beach at RWI and there are bicycles available. All are free to use. You can book excursions through the activities desk at the beach, or call somewhere else.
TikiHut in Turtle Cove has $10 chicken and ribs on Wednesday night, also $15.00 buckets of beer.
We did not rent a car last year, and may rent a car or scooters for one day just to explore, otherwise we will take the Gecko Shuttle as taxis were expensive to take everywhere.
Also good snorkeling in front of Coral Gardens.
You will love RWI and the wonderful beach right there. Building 1 is great and good view for sunsets. Did you go through VRBO? I know of three units in that building that save you money over the resort cost.
Have a great trip! I will try to post a report after my May trip.
