Contemporary Art at its Best showcases Caribbean art by Trudie Canwood-Kruger and Patricia Brintle.

Caribbean Art in SoHo

In bright, effulgent tones and sharp line-work, Trudie Canwood-Kruger's illustrative portraits and landscapes describe blithe, luminous color patterns that are enhanced by a guileless approach to shape and composition, giving the images a forthright precision and symmetry. Uniform washes of Caribbean-inspired color create bold shapes and patterns, resulting in bright, ecstatic images, which revel in cheerfully ordinary moments. The economy of the shape and value structure in these compositions results in generous specificity, providing each piece with a unique and, at times, witty atmosphere. Canwood-Kruger's perspective that "color is everything" informs both the efficient structure of each image's composition and the luminous, ecstatic values implicit in her work. Born in Arnhem, The Netherlands, Canwood-Kruger studied textile design and interior design, and, after receiving her degree, started her own business. Her paintings, cards, posters, and gyclees are sold in shops and art galleries in the Netherlands, Australia, and various Caribbean islands.

Originally from Haiti, Patricia Brintle's native land's bright and vibrant colors are tangible in every aspect of her work. Warm colors, bestowed upon on her subjects by the sun, dominate her paintings. Reflective of her emotions, she paints in the moment and is inspired by world events, friends, dreams, and images from contemporary media. Simple pleasures like sunsets, the female form, flowers, and dancing are recurring themes in Brintle's work, and her flowing and rhythmic lines convey her laid-back approach. Her portraits capture the life-story of the personality before her, focusing on the expressive quality of the eyes. Her medium varies with her subjects, using acrylic, oil, watercolor, ink and pencil to evoke unique aspects to the viewer. Brintle has been showing privately for years and recently has held public exhibitions in New York and Florida, as well as contributing to a project on the legacy of Janusz Korczak.
