Advice on whether to travel to DR in August!

Postby Vicky on Wed May 16, 2007 10:33 am

Looking into booking our honeymoon in July/August 2008 and fancy the Dominican, but hear its the rainiest time to go and most at risk of storms! Can you please advise?! What would people suggest? Have you been in August?! Being from England I am used to rain, but I dont want it to rain for all of my honeymoon!
All advice welcome!

I have a friend who went last year to Cuba in August and said the weather was very nice. Also it's true that it rains more during the summer months than the winter months.
Why don't you book a honeymoon trip to Mallorca or Greece? Or it may be too hot there at this time of the year...

We go to places like that every year on holiday so wanted to go somewhere abit further away and more exotic for our honeymoon! Its just unfortunate that most of those places have their rainy season in August!

Never been to DR in August - we always go in October or May.
But if you do go, the safer side of DR is North Coast (Puerto Plata area), which is rearly gets hit by strong storms.
And you are right about exoitic - it's a great country, a lot to see. If you do go to Puerto Plata area - visit Amber museum - DR is famous for it's amber and larimar.
Hope that helps.

The last time I was there I bought beautiful amber necklace and earrings. Their amber is purer and clearer. Have a great honeymoon!

"Most" of the time, even during the rainy season, storms simply blow in and an hour or so later the sun is back out. Also, if you have not already done so I would recommend getting some trip insurance because August in in the hurricane season...so if you trip is cancelled or you have to leave early your trip would be covered. (FYI...I travel during hurricane season all the time. You usually get a better rate and generally speaking the odds are you will be just fine!)

Its not worked like that over here - its more expensive to travel in August because it is the schools summer holidays so the travel agents put their prices up as they know its more demand! Its a pain really! We usually travel in June to avoid this! But our wedding is booked is 26th July! Will defo get travel insurance, always do anyway!
- But fingers crossed there's no hurricanes! That kinda scares me abit, being from England we never get anything like that! Are they common in DR in August???? eeek! :?
