The mild tropical climate of the Mexican Caribbean makes Vista del Mar's beach front accommodations a great vacation getaway. Nestled between the jungle and the sea lies the village of Akumal. Just an hour's drive south of Cancun, Akumal is worlds away from any crowded commercial resorts. Visitors return each year between May and October to watch the sea turtles emerge from the ocean and nest on the shores of Half Moon Bay. From an exciting day of deep-sea fishing, snorkeling, or scuba diving, to climbing ancient Mayan ruins or relaxing by the pool, Vista del Mar offers something for everyone.
Nearby Attractions:
Take a leisurely ride around Akumal and explore the beaches, lagoon, restaurants, and gift shops in town. Beach cruisers are for rent at the Vista del Mar reception desk. There are also some fun longer rides not far from town. Cross the highway, continue on the main road up the hill past the town and out into the jungle. Don't forget your bug spray! The access road along the main highway is also a good ride. Head south on this unpaved road for some good exercise.
Take a walk to Yal-ku Lagoon
Grab your snorkeling gear, a towel, and head down the road to the lagoon. An easy 5 minute walk from Vista del Mar, a minimal entry fee is charged to use this protected lagoon. By paying the fee you will be helping protect the unspoiled beauty of Yal-ku. Please refrain from wearing sunscreen in the lagoon, as it upsets the natural ecosystem.
Robinson Crusoe Tour
A five hour excursion that leaves Akumal Bay at 10:00 AM. You sail, fish, and snorkel in a secluded bay. Then the crew prepares the day's catch for lunch while you swim, hike, explore, or just relax. Reservations are recommended.
Water Activities
Akumal Dive Adventures offers a fully equipped dive and water sports center. Located on the beach between Vista del Mar and La Buena Vida Restaurant, the shop rents snorkel, kayak, and windsurf gear. Akumal Dive Adventures runs professional dive tours to reefs along the coast of Akumal. In addition, cenote, cavern, snorkeling, and diver certification programs are available.
Cenotes and Caves
The Yucatan Peninsula is made of limestone formations which have been eroded by the constant movement of water creating an extensive underground river and cave system. As a result, cenotes are the natural fresh and brackish water sinkholes that offer great snorkeling and cave/cavern diving. This unique hollow landscape has some of the most amazing dive sites in the world.
Aktun Chen
A large dry cave located 3 km south of Akumal has an excellent underground view of the cave system without having to get wet.
Dos Ojos
One of the most popular places for the cavern and cave diving. An exciting jungle ride takes you to its isolated location where you drop down into a bat cave. Please contact Akumal Dive Adventures for more information and tours.
Other Cenotes
Inquire at Akumal Dive Adventures next to La Buena Vida, about snorkeling and diving tours to some of the less traveled cenotes.
