More Info: Guana Island lies off the northeast coast of Tortola. It is a nature preserve whose conservationist owners are dedicated to maintaining the Island in its natural state and restoring indigenous plant and animal species. To help in this effort a team of scientists headed by a Harvard biologist come to Guana each year to research its flora, fauna and marine life. Guana's flamingo pond is host not only to a small flock of Caribbean roseate flamingos, but to many other species of birds as well, including rare and endangered species.
Sports lovers and beachcombers will find seven beaches, the main beach a glimmering strand of white powder sand. There are six others, some remote and secluded, two reachable only by boat. Castaway picnics are provided for those seeking total beach privacy. There are two excellent tennis courts, all water sports including fishing and snorkeling,, small sailing craft, kayaks, a croquet court and miles of walking and hiking trails.
Guest rooms are attractive and comfortable, each with an adobe style bath and private terrace offering sweeping views of the Atlantic and Caribbean. Dinner, casually elegant, is served on candle-lit terraces where menus include home-grown fruits and vegetables and Continental, Stateside and West Indian specialties. Guests gather in the rattan-furnished Clubhouse for cocktails and after-dinner coffee and drinks, music and conversation. Lunch is served buffet style and beach barbecues are held weekly. The bars are mostly self-service although blender drinks are prepared for you, and the hotel bills guests by the honor system. Rates include three meals per day plus wines at lunch and dinner and all on-Island activities. The resort is usually closed in September and October.

Caribbean Travel Tip Ocean Undercurrents If you get sucked out into the ocean by an undercurrent follow these instructions:
Do not panic, save all your strength.
Act immediately. Swim parallel to the shoreline. Even if you cannot, keep trying until you can.
What you are doing is swimming out of the undertow and into the current that will more than likely push you back to shore. Remember, in saltwater you float so you can stay alive for any number of days. Unless you are on a secluded beach a boat will reach you in time to rescue you should you fail to not be able to swim out of the undertow.
