Rawlins Plantation - St. Kitts
An elegant, traditional, romantic and beautiful Caribbean country house hotel. A delightful, quiet hideaway Plantation Inn of St. Kitts and Nevis in the West Indies.
|
More Info: Rawlins Plantation is a tranquil 10-room country Caribbean Inn, built from the ruins of a 17th Century sugar cane plantation, perched at 350 feet above sea level on the slopes of Mount Liamuiga at the "quiet" Northern end of St. Kitts, with spectacular views of neighboring French and Dutch islands. Set in 12 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds and surrounded by fields of lush green sugar there is a wonderful feeling of space and serenity.
Rawlins is for the sophisticated traveler, avoiding standardized mass tourism, and seeking the real Caribbean getaway -- peace, seclusion, simple elegance, historical ambience, lovely gardens and good food.
The food at Rawlins is highly acclaimed. An interesting, varied and innovative cuisine with a strong West Indian influence. Owner/chef Claire Rawson and her staff rely on a care and imagination that is matched only by the excellence of the produce freshly gathered from the plantation gardens, nearby farmers and local fishermen.
Room rates include breakfast and dinner -- a suitable approach found in many small and intimate inns of a similar style and quality.
Guest rooms are in charming, distinctive cottages (most of them created from the old plantation out-buildings -- for example, the honeymoon suite is an enchantingly converted windmill) scattered throughout the beautiful and colorful gardens that are rich with an abundance of exotic and tropical flowers such as hibiscus, oleander, plumbago, sesbenia, African tulip, immortelle, datura, bauhinia and flamboyant.
Daily life at Rawlins is easy and simple -- full of uncontrived delights and pleasures. Walking the coconut groves and meadows above Rawlins. Ambling through the gardens of mango, papaya, banana, soursop, passion fruit, avocado, breadfruit and lime.
Slumbering in an arbor hammock with the cool tradewind breezes. Admiring the antics of egrets, humming-birds, doves and kingbirds. Sipping rum punch and watching the gently swaying sea of sugar cane.
Or simply reading that long-saved book and cherishing precious time with your partner. The more energetic might exercise in the pool or play a few sets of tennis, and when the time is right, rent a car to discover the sights and beaches of St. Kitts.
Rawlins Plantation, one of the smallest and finest of St.Kitts hotels and resorts, has the atmosphere of an English country house, but with a traditional West Indian ease and informality that is perfect for relaxation. An intimate and romantic Caribbean Inn. A home rather than a hotel.
Owners Paul and Claire Rawson, and their discreet and friendly staff would like to welcome those looking for natural beauty, good food and tranquility in the unspoiled Caribbean.
Nearby Attractions: Activities: Facilities at Rawlins include a spring-fed swimming pool, grass tennis court, croquet, boules and great walks. Distances: Rawlins in one mile from the sea, two miles from the nearest beach (small and dark sand) and 16 miles from the better beaches. 14 miles from the airport and from the capital, Basseterre.

Facilities includes toiletries, hair-drier, bath with shower, ceiling fans and verandah, but in keeping with an old sugar plantation exclude mini-bars, telephone, television and air-conditioning. Caribbean Travel Tip Safety Tips Crime Information. Most visitors to the Caribbean have a relatively safe trip. However, thievery, purse snatching, and pick pocketing do happen, particularly in cities and at beaches. There has also been an increase in violent crimes, such as rape and assault against tourists. In some places, U.S. passports and identity documents are especially attractive to thieves. Robbery of yachts is a problem in some marinas.
Here are some precautions to keep in mind:
-- Safety begins when you pack. Leave expensive jewelry, unnecessary credit cards, and anything you would hate to lose at home.
-- Use a concealed money pouch or belt for passports, cash, and other valuables.
-- To facilitate replacing a lost or stolen passport, carry two extra passport photos and a photocopy of your passport information page and other identity documents with you in a separate place from those items.
-- Do not take valuables to the beach. When possible, use the hotel safe when you go to the beach or into town.
-- When you enter a marina, register with the local government authorities.
