More Info: Le Grande Almandier is a family run ten-room inn that caters to the discerning visitor. We pride ourselves on our level of service and our ability to go the extra mile to make our guests comfortable. We provide standing fans and h/c water in every room and our lobby is equipped with a television set just so you don’t forget the rest of the world is out there!
The prime beachfront location means a ringside view of the Leatherback Turtle’s impressive journey up the beach to lay her eggs. Close proximity to the forest allows access to a range of hiking tours and trails with some of the best flora and fauna that the island has to offer.
Choose from ten suites that blend modern amenities with old-fashioned charm. For larger families, we have three suites that sleep up to six, while the other seven rooms can accommodate three.
All rooms have ensuite bathroom facilities with h/c water. Get ready for bed with sound of the surf just below your window and wake to the sounds of the forest. You will sleep the sleep of kings! All prices are inclusive of a Continental breakfast.
Nearby Attractions: This small, fishing village of three hundred and fifty people (350) is still one of the most naturally beautiful spots on the island. While Grande Riviere is situated on the North Coast, the access road makes its way up the picturesque East Coast through a series of quaint fishing villages and past some breathtaking coastal views. The remote location has kept development at a minimum and the coastline is still pristine and unspoilt.
Named after the wide flowing river that originates deep in the Northern Range, Grande Riviere boasts a superb beach, which for six months of the year (March 01 – August 31) is one of the nesting sites of the protected Leatherback Turtle. This gentle curve of coarse, yellow sand has remained unchanged for hundreds of years and the only signs of civilization are a few unobtrusive buildings that blend into an otherwise unbroken jungle. Tall, forested headlands border the eastern end of the beach where the Grande Riviere River comes down to meet the sea. It is to this spot that the Leatherback Turtle returns to lay her precious cargo year after year.
The serene surroundings are home to a variety of both bird and wild life and there are also a number of hiking trails and waterfalls to explore.
The fishing off the North Coast is excellent and Cyril, our resident guide, will be more than happy to show you the ropes. You can visit a number of rivers and waterfalls located nearby. We will be happy to recommend hiking trails for both the amateur and the seasoned hiker. Even a simple drive can be an exciting event. Visit the nearest fishing depot at sundown and see the fishermen bringing ashore their haul or, in local parlance, pulling seine.
If this all sounds a little too strenuous, you can lie back and enjoy an aromatherapy massage by our trained masseuse. Or just relax with a good book and enjoy the sounds of the forest.
There are a number of local tours available to showcase the beauty and history of the area. Kayak around the bay or do some exploring of your own on a river raft built by local fishermen.
Without a doubt, this is nature at her best with many different species of birds appearing right off your verandah. The “pawi” (piping guan), an endangered bird that nests in the Grande Riviere forest, can sometimes be seen in the wild nutmeg trees that dot its terrain. Tours to the Bird Sanctuary can be arranged for the more serious bird watcher. If you want to get out and see some of the island, we can arrange tours to the Pitch Lake and other historical areas. Cyril, our resident tour guide can guide you along different forest trails in search of the many rare birds, butterflies and wildlife that make the forest their home.
On the way back, stop at a secluded beach or waterfall and cool off with a refreshing swim. Visits to lovely spots such as “Shark River” (No sharks in residence) are worth a special trip.
