Located on the Samaná Peninsula on the northern (Atlantic) coast of the Dominican Republic, Las Terrenas was until recently just a small fishing village. Isolated by a mountain range (cordillera) running the length of the Peninsula, Las Terrenas was inhabited mostly by the descendants of Taino Indians and African slaves who subsisted by fishing and farming. Later, Cibaeño settlers were sent by the Dominican government to develop local agriculture in the hills around Las Terrenas. A few adventurous French travellers "discovered" Las Terrenas in the mid 1970s, but the lack of electricity and a paved road connecting Las Terrenas to the rest of the country kept it isolated and undeveloped.
In 1989 a paved road arrived, and in 1996 a private company began to supply electricity. Las Terrenas has now developed a thriving tourist trade catering mostly to visitors from France, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, and Canada, as well as Dominicans, but it retains much of its unspoiled charm with palm-shaded, uncrowded beaches and sparkling turquoise waters. New European and North American residents and tourists give it a cosmopolitan outlook that supplements the local culture.
In the evenings, there is a choice of either solitude on a terrace under a starry sky or dancing with the locals into the wee hours of the morning. In addition to traditional local vendors of fresh produce, fish, and groceries (including bottled water), there are now a fully stocked supermarket; banks with ATM machines; and arts and crafts, beach, and gift shops. Restaurants are plentiful, many of them owned and operated by European expatriates.

About St John, U.S. Virgin Islands - St. John Of all the islands, St John is probably the most unspoiled, thanks to the contribution of one of the world's best known philanthropists, Laurence Rockefeller. Had it not been for Rockefeller's gift of money and his desire to preserve beautiful St John, the landscape would probably look more commercial, much like the other Virgin Islands.
