More Info: Green Turtle Cay, or “GTC”, is the jewel of the Abaco chain of islands. It retains much of its charm of its 18th century origins, especially in its main settlement of New Plymouth, a storybook village with narrow streets and old New England style clapboard buildings, decorated in gingerbread trim and painted in bright whites and pastels. New Plymouth provides a delightful trip back in time.
“Pirates Rest” is centrally located on this 3 mile long island and is a short golf cart commute from the village of New Plymouth, home to just under 500 persons. Most of the inhabitants can trace their ancestors back to the revolutionary war loyalists who first settled here. This fascinating history can be traced at the Albert Lowe Museum in New Plymouth. The village has a wide variety of galleries, restaurants and shops where gold jewelry manufactured in Abaco and beautiful Bahamian art work are among some of the treasures that can be bought. New Plymouth is home to world renowned artist, Alton Lowe, who opens his private museum to the public periodically during the year.
No visit to GTC is complete without a visit to Miss Emily's Blue Bee Bar, the birth of the “Goombay Smash”, a rum punch served throughout the Caribbean.
Nearby Attractions: Located on an island measuring just 3 miles in length and less than ½ mile wide, “Pirates Rest” is surrounded by crystal clear ocean waters with some of the most spectacular beaches in the world.
Each with its own individual flavor and appeal, visitors can always find a white sandy stretch of beach they can call there own. The breathtaking ocean beach runs the entire length of Green Turtle Cay, and is only 6-8 minute walk from Pirates Rest. It's a favorite for beachcombers in search of tropical shells and driftwood. Watch the waves hammer the coral reef 500 feet offshore. This reef also provides for great snorkeling.
Coco Bay, a 3 minute walk from Pirates Rest, has calm, shallow waters, and is a great place for kids, or to practice snorkeling.. Bonefish can also be located here.
Gillian Bay, located at the southern tip of the Island, is a must to see too. See where the coconut trees meet the sea of Abaco.
Enjoy a drink at the Green Turtle Club Beach Bar while looking at sailing vessels moored in the harbor. The white sandy beaches and often changing shades of the turquoise ocean are something you will remember forever.
Amenities: The first floor consists of a fully equipped kitchen, dinning room, living room, master bathroom and bedroom (queen size bed). There is also a wrap-around deck and a screened in porch running the length of the building.
On the top floor there are 2 bedrooms (2 single beds 1 full). Also a bathroom and study and an outside deck. There is central AC, ceiling fans, 10 foot high ceilings and 7 French doors. The house is tastefully decorated with African, Caribbean and nautical antiques.
The house also has a washing machine, coffee maker, barbecue grill, 300 channel TV, VCR and videos, 2 large bookcases with a wide selection of books, CD player, chess set and backgammon board.
