Like most of the Yucatan Peninsula, Belize was part of the Mayan Kingdom from 300 B.C. to A.D. 900. Close by Belize’s Inland, ruins of the vast Mayan civilization protrude from the depths of the rain forests. Spanish conquistadors arrived in the 16th century but were lured away by the immense quantities of gold found in Mexico making room for the British. Though Belize gained its’ independence in 1981, English is still the official language, and elements of British culture are intermingled with those of the Caribbean.
Just off Belize’s 280 kilometer Caribbean coastline is the second-largest barrier reef in the world, along with a network of over 200 coral cays and atolls. Tropical fish of every imaginable hue populate the placid, aquamarine waters off the coast. Gentle Nurse Sharks average four to six feet in length, and dive masters often feed them small fish. Rays, which have a ‘wing-span’ of two to four feet, swim directly towards the divers, inviting them to reach out and stroke their wings. Tourists will delight at the manatee, grouper, snapper and all of the marine wildlife. A truly unforgettable adventure, most of the creatures in this area have a great tolerance for divers and seem to enjoy the human interaction.
Highlights for visitors are the excavated remains of the ancient cities Altun Ha and Lamanai, which attest to the wealth and sophistication of the Mayans’ glorious past. In the interior of the country, near the Guatemalan border, the Cayo region encompasses nature sanctuaries, the majestic Hidden Valley Falls, the lively town of San Ignacio, and a host of splendid Mayan ruins. There are travelers who claim to have experienced nirvana from the summit of the main pyramid of Xunantunich, which also commands a sweeping vista of the Mopan Valley and Guatemala.
Journey to Belize, stay at Cayo Espanto and discover what paradise is really about.
Nearby Attractions: The staff of Cayo Espanto will make all arrangements for tours, excursions and diving after you arrive. Schedules are usually quite flexible and a private tour/charter is always an option. Should you desire to make arrangements for activities prior to arrival, just let us know. Please keep in mind that various weather conditions may require a change of plans or even a cancellation of an adventure in extreme cases. Fly Fishing Fly fishing is always a favorite activity for guests of Cayo Espanto who have their own equipment. Because hundreds of bonefish have made their home around Cayo Espanto, the angler will usually find great success all around the island. The hard sea-bottom immediately around the island provides for unusually easy wading. In addition to wading around the island, guests may hire a guide and boat for some wonderful flats fishing for bonefish, tarpon and permit. Scuba Diving Scuba Diving the second largest barrier reef in the world is not to be missed. Cayo Espanto is within 15-20 minutes of some of the world's best and most famous dive sites. Private trips are easily arranged. Guests who wish to dive the Blue Hole should be aware that it is an all-day trip usually leaving about 8:00 in the morning and returning at 6:00 in the evening. A private charter is available or guests may choose to go with a group from San Pedro. For truly the best diving in the most pampered environment, Cayo Espanto is the place to be. German Alamilla, our Dive Master, is available for private charter trips. When he is not on a private charter with our guests he leads our regular open diving and snorkeling trips. To guarantee diving with German, advance arrangements are requested, otherwise, we can not guarantee German's availability. Snorkeling Snorkeling in Hol Chan, Belize's National Marine Park, has been named by USA Today one of the world's top ten snorkeling sites. Private charters to Hol Chan are available or guests may choose to join a boat from San Pedro. Glass bottom boats also provide another window to the underwater life below.
Spa We now have full services with an on-site massage therapist. Our Spa offers manicures, pedicures, facials, Aromatherapy and more... Call us for further details. Boating Another favorite trip is a day with boat and guide for some fishing, snorkeling and conching (in season). After a morning of fishing and conching, your guide will grill your catch for you on a beach. After lunch, it's back to the water for some great snorkeling, all out fun and relaxing. You can also choose to visit other islands (some deserted and some with villages). Return just in time to watch the sunset and have cocktails before dinner.
Tours For landlubbers, daily excursions to the mainland of Belize offer fantastic adventure opportunities. The Mayan ruins of Lamanai are a must. River trips and visits to inland spas are included along the way. Once again, private charters are also available. Birdwatching On nearby Cayo Rosario and Bird Caye is an experience for all. These islands are very close to Cayo Espanto and are home to many types of birds. (spoonbill, pelican, frigates just to name a few). The adventure allows guests to walk around and through mangrove. This tour is highlighted by the Belize Audobon Society.
Explore If you just want to go exploring in a skiff (our name for a 21-ft Mexican-made boat), one of the island's staff can take you out. The trip is always an adventure and full of unpredictability. Deserted beaches, uninhabited islands, beautiful waters and an occasional dolphin can make your trip very memorable.
Picnic How about a gourmet picnic lunch on a deserted beach for just the two of you? We will send an advance team to prepare the perfect romantic lunch site. Afterwards, we will deliver you to your paradise. Stay as long as you like and we will pick you up at a pre-determined time. Or, if you prefer, take our cellular phone and give us a call (we are only 10 minutes away).

Caribbean Travel Tip Entry and Exit Requirements Entering: Every island in the Caribbean has its own entry requirements. Most countries allow you to visit for up to two or three months if you show proof of U.S. citizenship and a return or onward ticket. Some countries, however, require that you have a valid passport. If you are arriving from an area infected with yellow fever, many Caribbean countries require you to have a certificate of vaccination against yellow fever. Some countries have an airport departure tax of up to $25. For authoritative information on a country's entry and exit requirements and on its customs and currency regulations, contact its embassy, consulate, or tourist office in the United States.
Returning - Caution! Make certain that you can return to the United States with the proof of citizenship that you take with you. Although some Caribbean countries may allow you to enter with only a birth certificate, U.S. Immigration requires that you document both your U.S. citizenship and identity when you reenter the United States.
The best document to prove your U.S. citizenship is a valid U.S. passport. Other documents of U.S. citizenship include an expired U.S. passport, a certified copy of your birth certificate, a Certificate of Naturalization , a Certificate of Citizenship , or a Report of Birth Abroad of a U.S. Citizen.
To prove your identity, either a valid driver's license or a government identification card that includes a photo or a physical description is acceptable.
If you lose or have your U.S. passport stolen while overseas, report it immediately to the local police and the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. A lost or stolen birth certificate or driver's license cannot be replaced outside the United States. There are several countries, most notably Barbados, the Dominican Republic, Grenada, Haiti, and Jamaica, where airlines have consistently refused to board American citizens with insufficient proof of U.S. citizenship. The resulting delays can be inconvenient as well as expensive.
