Casa Tortuga Villa
Casa Tortuga is a two-story five bedroom villa on the beach in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, Belize. The beach at Casa Tortuga is 1/4 mile from the reef and Hol Chan Marine Preserve. Guides can pick you up at our dock for scuba diving, snorkeling, fishing and sightseeing.
|
More Info: Casa Tortuga Villa is less than two miles from the center of town. There are bicycles, golf carts, and taxis available for transportation.
The pale pink villa consists of 4,128 sq. ft. including 60 ft. verandas on both levels, facing the sea Located on the upper level are two large bedrooms, the living room, bar, bath, large kitchen, and two dining areas, as well as a third dining area on the veranda. The beach level includes three bedrooms, large open area, bath with tub and shower, and a 60 ft. veranda on the waterfront. For smaller accomodations, click here for our Pelican's Nest Guest House.
The pool is the largest private pool in Belize, measuring 38 feet long and 18 feet wide, plus an 8 1/2 foot wide circular alcove, which holds the 300 year old bronze horse fountain from Versailles, France.
The master bedroom, the Casa Tortuga Room, on the upper level has a king size bed. The closet doors are mirrored and the room is furnished in antique dark green Captain's furniture handpainted with clipper ships. This bedroom has two sets of french doors which open onto the veranda overlooking the Caribbean.
The second upstairs bedroom, the Jungle Room, is large, 14 ft. by 24 ft. with a king canopy bed of large bamboo. At one end of the room is a mantelpiece under a large carved mirror, flanked by paper mache animal masks. The wicker furniture includes an oversized chaise upholstered in cream with jaguar print pillows. This room also has a game table with a roulette wheel underneath and a sea view.
The living room has a white sectional sofa and a marble coffee table. It has two sets of French double doors opening onto the veranda. The antique walnut bar seats three at the front, and has a back bar with curved glass cabinets and shelving, while the ceiling of the bar holds the crystal stemware and lighting.
The Dining table is oval glass with a brass base and Parsons high back chairs with covered legs. A large leafy chandelier with white shades on the candlelight bulbs light the dining area. Blue and lavender hydrangeas in an Imari container serve as a centerpiece.
The kitchen is equipped with all G.E. appliances including a microwave. All of the cabinets, doors and ceilings are mahogany. The stove hood and kitchen counters are tile. The floors throughout the entire villa are tile also. The kitchen has a table and seating for four. An 8 ft. tall antique walnut china cabinet contains the glassware and china service.
The upstairs bath is large with a tub and shower. The tile vanity has solid brass faucets, a large mirror and good lighting. There is also a ceiling fan, as in all of the rooms.
The upper level veranda is 60 ft. long, with Pawley Island double hammocks at each end. There is a comfortable wicker lounge, chair and ottoman with plush oversized white cushions at one end of the veranda, and the other end has a round wicker table with four high back wicker chairs with cushions.
The beach level has three additional bedrooms. The Maya Room opens directly onto the veranda and beach. The view of the turquoise Caribbean from the half-canopied bed is wonderful. This room is accented with Mayan artifacts and paintings of jaguars. There are more jaguars in Belize than in any other country in the world. They inhabit the rainforest on the mainland of Belize.
The second beach level bedroom is the Palm Room. This room has a queen canopy bed and wicker furniture. It is surrounded by coconut palms outside with a western view of the sunsets and a partial sea view. The artwork reflects Belizean architecture, landscapes, and Caribbean scenes by renowned local artists. Since the sea view in the Palm room is indirect, there is a color TV built in as in the upstairs living room.
The third bedroom is the Seabreeze Room which has a queen bed and a beautiful view of the sea. This bedroom opens onto an open living area with an eight foot long mahogany bench carved with monkeys and tropical fruit trees. There are also tables and chairs in the living area and on the veranda.
Nearby Attractions: Activities in the area include snorkeling, scuba diving, fishing, sailing, windsurfing, parasailing, sea kayaking, jet skiing, and daily snorkel excursions to the nearby island of Caye Caulker on a skiff or catamaran. There are boat trips to the ancient Mayan ruins of Altun Ha on the mainland, nature trips to Bird Island and daily round trip flights to the largest Central American Mayan ruin in Tikal, Guatemala.
San Pedro is a quiet village with friendly English speaking inhabitants. Island law dictates that no buildings be taller than a palm tree, so fortunately, three stories is the maximum limit on the island The restaurants in San Pedro serve great food at average prices, although we believe that our staff at Casa Tortuga cook the most delicious food on the island! The lobster in Belize is also excellent. The Belizeans on the island are happy, content people, and the atmosphere is delightful.
SNORKELING Guides can pick you up at our pier for snorkeling to the reef. The morning trips usually begin at 9AM and return around 11:30 AM. The afternoon trips are from about 2 until 4:30 PM. The trip makes two snorkel stops. Alphonso is an excellent guide, since he helps beginners get acquainted with their gear, as well as others who may have not snorkeled recently. Alphonso points out exotic fish hiding among the rocks and coral, that may otherwise go unnoticed. Roberto Bradley is another excellent snorkel guide. Although snorkel fins, mask and snorkel may be rented. SCUBA DIVING We have a staff of good scuba guides. You can rent all of your scuba gear at dive shops nearby. There is a dive boat that makes a day trip with three scuba stops, including the Blue Hole, Turneffe Island and the red footed Booby Bird Sanctuary. This dive trip picks up our guests at our pier about 6:30 AM, serves continental breakfast on board, a well as lunch and returns about 4:30 PM.
FISHING Fishing trips are half and full days. It is good to go early during your visit, so that you can enjoy all of the snapper, grouper, etc. that you have caught. Our cook has many delicious recipes for the fish.
EXCURSIONS CAYE CAULKER Caye Caulker is seven miles away and is noted for its lobster fishing. There are good photo opportunities there, since it is more primitive than San Pedro, with authentic Caribbean style houses. Many of the houses are brightly painted, with yellow walls, blue shutters, red roofs, etc. The flowers are also abundant, and there are lobster traps stacked high around the island. Carlos is a good guide to Caye Caulker. He makes a snorkel stop at Coral Gardens on the way over, and at Shark Ray Alley on the way home. (The sharks in Belize are nurse sharks, and are completely harmless). Carlos usually finds dolphins on the bay side of Caye Caulker for viewing also. Hustler Tour also has a trip to Caye Caulker on their catamaran sailboat, named the "Me Too", which accommodates about 25 passengers. This trip also makes two snorkel stops, at the same locations.
BIRD ISLAND This island is only a few miles from our caye, and has a large variety of birds nesting there. March is a time when there are many babies in the nests. There are white cranes, pink spoonbills, blue herons, as well as other exotic birds.
ALTUN HA MAYAN RUIN Carlos is a good guide to ALTUN HA, since he is well versed on the history of the Mayans, as well as the Altun Ha site. On this excursion, he usually picks up our guests at our pier at 8AM, goes across the bay behind our caye, and then proceeds up a river bordered by jungle. The trees have many varieties of bromiliads as well as orchids. The orchids are abundant in April, May and June. Birdwatching is also a major attraction on this trip. When you arrive at La Bomba, there are three small grass casitas with carvings from Belize's zirocote tree. Here you board a yellow school bus for the 20 minute ride through occasional villages to the Altun Ha site. After the tour of the ruin, you continue by bus to the Maruba Resort for lunch and a swim at their beautiful pool, surrounded by rocks, ferns and a waterfall. After Maruba, you return to the boat, and back to Casa Tortuga about 4:30 PM.
TIKAL, GUATEMALA: Tikal is the largest Mayan ruin in Central America.
We can also arrange excellent airfares - to Belize for you and your group through our Belize travel wholesalers. We certainly hope Casa Tortuga Villa meets all of your accommodation requirements and highest expectations for a wonderful vacation!
Amenities: The bath on the beach level has a tub and shower. There is also an outdoor shower, which is convenient for those returning from water sports.
A barrel of fresh water is supplied for your snorkel and scuba gear.
Although there is a laundry and dry cleaners in San Pedro, They only have two day service, So you may want to bring enough clothes for your entire stay.
There is a plentiful supply of games in the bar, a regulation dart board with sets of darts, and a set of horse shoes set up under the palms as well. The villa is also equipped with color cable TV, a VCR, tape player and CD player. To make long distance calls from the telephone at Casa Tortuga Villa, you will need a calling card number from your long distance carrier, or you may call collect.
Our staff live in a casita on the property, and take excellent care of our guests. Although daily maid service is included in the rent, our cook and her assistant will prepare up to three meals daily for your group for a fee per day plus groceries. She will prepare regular or virgin piña coladas and appetizers on your arrival at the villa.
For your arrival dinner, she usually makes a typical gourmet Belizean meal of BBQ red snapper, green salad, fried plantains, a vegetable, beans and rice cooked in coconut milk, and dessert. For the first breakfast she serves coffee, fresh squeezed orange juice, fresh fruit, eggs, bacon, beans, homemade fry jacks, sweet bread, toast and cereal if desired.
You may choose to bring gourmet coffee with you. There is a deposit for the groceries for the first few meals. After your arrival, you can plan the other meals with the cook, and give her grocery money as needed. She keeps grocery receipts and returns any unused money to you.
